Puccini for Beginners Reviews
I actually loved this more than I would have expected. ... I thought it was very well done, and to be honest, Elizabeth Reaser caught my attention in the movie Stay.. absolutely stunning performance here (as well as in Stay).. Now, if only the movie could make someone fall in love with ME.. then it would get that 5th star.
What a gem and thanks to Netflix for recommending the film based on my viewing history! This romantic comedy takes place in NY where Allegra (Elizabeth Reaser) just broke up with her girlfriend due to a fear of commitment. She feels sad and lonely until a chance encounter with a college professor named Phillip (Justin Kirk) sparks feelings never felt before for a man. Allegra views the sex as fun but is not interested in a committed relationship with him whereas Phillip breaks up with his girlfriend of six years (Grace) since he is madly in love with Allegra. Since Allegra is gay, she meets a woman and decides to date her, eventually getting involved with her. But life has a big surprise for these people and a chain reaction takes place that will change their lives forever. Great script, witty, funny and romantic. Definitely a winner and highly recommended!
A lesbian on the rebound begins dating a man and a woman who have, unbeknownst to her, recently broken up. Most of this film clips by at a great pace, and some of Allegra's lines, like "Those who break up with me usually earn my life-long devotion," are quite funny. And the smart dialogue, especially by random strangers on the street a la Annie Hall, is a good reason to like this film. However, though I have no problem that the film eventually degrades into a basic tale about the need for commitment and emotional honesty, I don't think that Allegra emerges as a character who could learn that lesson or one deserving of the film's comic ending. Has she really learned enough, or doesn't life always tell us that we can only truly learn once everything is already gone? Overall, I didn't laugh at this comedy, but a little smile appeared once or twice.
I really wanted to like "Puccini for Beginners" but it is a heavily flawed film. 1. It is not funny enough. I don't think I laughed out loud once and I only chuckled a few time. 2. The main character is not sympathetic enough. She is cheating on both her boyfriend and her girlfriend. 3. It steals too much from the Woody Allen films "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan" but is not nearly as clever as it wants to be. 4. There is hardly any opera music or reference to opera. With a title that contains the name "Puccini," I was expecting opera to play a bigger part. Despite that, there are some mildly funny parts and the cast is attractive, especially Gretchen Moll. I wish she had been in the film more. "Puccini for Beginners" is not a really bad film but it is disappointing because it could have been much better. If you are looking for a good lesbian themed comedy, watch "Gray Matters." It was much funnier.
Elizabeth Reaser is lovely, complicated, and adorably clueless. Aspects of this movie echo Annie Hall: random strangers doling out romantic advice, eccentric fantasy like the sentient answering machine. Insightful commentary on sexuality and gender.
