Rebel in the Rye Reviews
As a writer, this movie inspired me to keep writing. I watch it repeatedly whenever I feel tired in my writing activities.
This was an interesting story about someone I didn't know much about (J.D. Salinger). Nicholas Hoult gives a decent performance as the somewhat quiet and thoughtful Salinger. Kevin Spacey is in this film, although he isn't in every scene - seeing his name put me off watching it but I'd say he's not one of the main characters and its worth seeing anyway. I thought the narration, insight into the authors assumed thoughts, was particularly intriguing. I did feel both frustrated and sorry for the main character at different times. Its a somewhat thoughtful watch, which I reckon is worth seeing.
A nice movie to understand how was written a great book.
I enjoyed this movie about the life of JD Salinger and the story it told about the trials he encountered in life leading up to his famous novel "Cather in the Rye" and the character Holder Caufield. The movie also has a great cast to bring the story to life.
The reviews of this film are what I have a problem with on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics savaged it somewhat unfairly. The smug "modest biopic" comments from audience members are proof positive that there are still Holden Caulfields in the world--phonies who think everyone (and every film) around them is phony. (And Zoey Deutch didn't get a lot to do because the film isn't about Oona O'Neill!). Is it the best film I've ever seen? No. But it's really interesting--especially if you've read or studied Salinger, or if you are interested in the subject--as is the case with all biopics!
The narrative races when it should flesh things out and drags when it should go faster. Zoey Deutch especially is given little to do.
An interesting look into the troubled life of author J.D. Salinger. It had its slow moments but it was pretty engaging overall. I was impressed with the he amount they covered in under two hours. Catcher is one of my favorite novels so naturally I enjoyed this look into its history
Rebel in the Rye is a decent film. It is about life of celebrated but reclusive author, J.D. Salinger. Nicholas Hoult and Victor Garber give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Danny Strong did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama.
Excellent movie about a difficult subject. If it weren't for WWII, J. D. Salinger's life would've been, in appearance, the most boring ever. But in his head were the thoughts and feelings we all shared and he had the unique talent to express it perfectly. As a fan, it's almost embarrassing to be interested in his personal life when he so desperately wanted to stay separate from Holden Caulfield. As a pennance I will read the book for the nth time.
Just came across this movie. Don't even remember hearing about it. I have read no reviews, nor have I researched anything about it. I did recognize a few of the actors but was not influenced by that much. I hoped as a follower of Salinger and his work, that I wouldn't find it cheesy. I loved it.
It's very sad we that don't see Mr. Spacey these days anymore! Hope see him on the silver screen soon.
Is this Kevin Spacey's last movie? JD Salinger's quest to write Catch in the Rye is told about a man, troubled before, becomes more so after WWII. The journey to writing one of the most important novels of the 20th century is told here. the impact of its success and the aftermath is told. In the end, according to the movie, writing became Salinger's "religion" more than anything else. (Was the last writing published in 1965?) this tells the tale of an artist; interesting.
A paint by numbers bio pic. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm thankful for this film though, because I just reread The Catcher in the Rye, and it's even better than I remember.
I remember reading Cather In The Rye and not getting it. Puberty, being a teenage muffhound, and shockingly unapologetically vulgar (for the time). I don't know, something about aimless teenage rebellion against an abstracted society in general and not accepting that everyone has signed up for the way things are without a fight. No one is really fighting to change it, only fighting to find their part in it. Well this movie captures how a hero refused to fall in line. Then the irony of how he must suffer to protect a society he is at odds with. After skipping some stones that would ripple for the next few centuries, our hero recluses in the angst he was never willing to part with. An enticing film that inspires, and, at the least, shows us the historical significance of that one book we were excited to read because it was banned and had cuss words in it.
one of the best movies made about writers, maybe the best, but it doesnt have a lot of competition in that genre, which is always weighed down by hero worship. who else would want to make a film avout a writer but someone who worships the writer? still, this one was less ridiculous than most and did seem to give us some info about how the book's characters and story evolved in his mind
Really nice movie. I loved Hoult's portrayal of JD Salinger. Kevin Spacey's character was great too. The beautiful cinematography tops it off.
