R.I.P.D. Reviews

An endurance test masquerading as a motion picture.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Feb 25, 2023

R.I.P.D. isn’t nearly as bad as its near-deafening advance buzz indicated – though, really, what movie could be? – but that doesn’t mean the laughs and gasps are satisfyingly abundant in this loud and clunky sci-fi fantasy action-comedy.

Admit it. It even sounds stale.

| Original Score: 1.5/4.0 | Sep 21, 2020

Starts very solidly, but goes very soft by the end.

It is among the worst examples of what comics on film have left us over the years. [Full Review in Spanish]

R.I.P.D. is a movie that suffers from a passel of lost opportunities.

| Mar 10, 2020

Based on a comic book that literally had to be better, writers Phil Hay, Matt Manfredi and David Dobkin did director Robert Schwentke no favors, but Schwentke directed The Time Traveler's Wife, so he had it coming.

| Original Score: D | Aug 27, 2019

R.I.P.D. tries desperately to capture the same blend of action and comedy that worked so well in the "Men in Black" series, but the film only proves how difficult that balance really is.

| Original Score: D | Apr 10, 2019

The actual conceit of hunting down the dead might have played better if the film weren't clearly trying to rip-off Men in Black in the most unambiguous way possible.

Watching R.I.P.D., the unfamiliar viewer is given the distinct impression that this movie is probably an entertaining graphic novel -- but it's a terrible film.

| Nov 16, 2018

To call R.IP.D. "cartoonish" is probably a compliment... but it's not quite fun enough for these four excellent actors to justify taking the money.

The performances are also fun, even if the story is derivative and the special effects look to be photo-shopped at a K-mart.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Oct 10, 2018

The chase scenes and special effects are great, or at least much better than I anticipated.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 6, 2018

Red director Robert Schwentke comic book adaption of R.I.P.D., starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, blends the fun and the familiar for a supernatural buddy-cop adventure.

| Feb 7, 2018

Please, please don't see it. Value your time more than I did.

| Original Score: 0/5 | Jan 9, 2017

What we are left with is a mildly entertaining, utterly harmless mid-summer blockbuster that marks another misstep in the career of Ryan Reynolds.

| Original Score: C | Jul 11, 2016

Bake a 'Men In Black' pie; throw in some 'Ghostbusters,' 'This Is the End,' 'True Grit,' and 'Weeds,' drain the fun out, and you get the half-baked, derivative 'R.I.P.D.'

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 18, 2016

The kind of terrible that doesn't wash out, destined to be remembered among the pantheon of big budget bombs like "The Adventures Of Pluto Nash" and "Cutthroat Island."

| Original Score: 1/5 | Apr 17, 2016

It's not a buddy-cop movie, nor is it an action movie. It's just one vaguely funny joke told for 98 minutes.

| Jan 22, 2014

It's a predictable and cliché filled soap opera mess played straight with an afterlife gimmick.
