Critics Consensus

Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original's emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.

Audience Says

Road House can sometimes be so bad it's good, but more often, the uneven acting and ridiculous story are just disappointing.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk In spite of otherwise flat-looking film-making, the action choreography of Road House 2.0 is thoroughly enjoyable. Rated: 3/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday The gonzo magic of the 1989 original is gone, but there’s enough bone-breaking action here to satisfy B-movie aficionados. Rated: 3/4 Apr 8, 2024 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, some Florida sunshine and at least one fight scene for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. Just try to grab a seat in a quiet corner. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder Road House is an entertaining action remake of the 1989 original, which replicates that film’s dumb and over-the-top spirit with extra brawn that doesn’t make it smarter, but keeps it at a consistently mindless piece of trash that’s fun to watch. Rated: 3/5 Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press Brandt clearly has access to money and his old man owns the cops, so plant some drugs or other incriminating evidence in Frankie's office. Do that, and a mostly naked Conor MacGregor doesn't even need to get involved. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer We Live Entertainment Clocking in at just shy of two hours, it’s at its best when it leans into the comedy of its narrative and stops short of aiming to beat all the bad guys, and a few good guys along with them, to a bloody pulp. Lauren L Terrible script, worse acting. This movie is unrealistic and completely unwatchable. It’s not “so bad it’s good”; it’s just so bad. The storyline makes no sense. It’s just one ridiculous thing after another. I love the original. I understand it’s not supposed to be taken too seriously. This remake doesn’t recreate any of the original magic. It’s just stupid. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Audience Member Such a disappointment. Connor was awful. Puts a stain on the original Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Scott K This movie is utter garbage. This doesnt have any closeness to the original. Jake Gyllenhaal tried his best in a lack luster film. I would rather watch 2 rats screwing in a wool sock than to ever watch this movie again. I would watch the original with Patrick Swayze any day. RIP Mr. Swayze. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Frans B Not the flair and excitement of the first one, but still enough action, and very well executed & choreographed action at that. Story seems thinner and cast feels not very convincing. Great cast but in lacks in character. A bit disappointed, expected more ... but still watchable Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Peter V No, I like Jake Gyllenhaai, but mistake to make this movie. The original Roadhouse I find clearly better! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Alyxia E Superb casting, acting, writing, setting, and weaving of comedic elements throughout with marvelous pacing. Finally saw Swayze as Dalton (GenX from late 60s but never got around to it before), and it made me come back and watch this Dalton again. Loved this film both times. Few films are worth watching more than once (imo), let alone within about a year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
