Una buena película con buenas actuaciones y buena música; la recomiendo.

It was OK. The character development was alright as far as Shante is concerned, but fell short on all other fronts. As for the story, it lacks energy and conviction, and only delivers on the rap battling. The more compelling elements of her story are under-developed, so the movie lacks the depth and emotional connection it really deserves. A shame really

Watching this movie was like watching paint dry... more slowly than usual. :( There were soooo many parts where you're like, "OOOOH! something crazy is about to happen!!" and then... NOPE. It's a rollercoaster ride of waiting for ANYTHING EXCITING to happen. WOW... most BORING movie I think I've seen in my LIFE! AMAZING ACTING THO!!!! AMAZING ACTORRRSS!!! The other part is .. .this was supposed to be about a Rap Legend... you don't really see ANY of the amazing aspects to what she accomplished, how famous she became or ANYTHING. MY Rating? GARBAGE

This film doesn't differentiate itself much from the other music backstory dramas but the strong acting by all involved keeps it entertaining..

It was an ordinary life story with no major events. It started strong though, I admired the mother character but the rest was quite mediocre and I didn't enjoy the music much as well.

Great acting!!! I love how this movie delved into her personal life instead of her professional life!!! You get to see more of what makes a celebrity who they are!!!

Very good movie. The struggles that she went through in this movie is something that is too familiar to me. The lead actress did a wonderful playing Roxanne. I appreciated the good storytelling to this film. It's one of Netflix best original films. The cast did good, the directing was good, and also, the cinematography was awesome. I recommend watching this film. It might make a lot of audiences uncomfortable due to the relationship between young Roxanne, and an older man, Cross.

The only thing that redeems this messy film is the superb acting specially from the lead actress Chanté Adams; she made me care about her character and root for her character, although neither the character's background or the struggles that the character went through have been represented well. Also, Mahershala Ali gave an awesome and powerful performance, he steals every scene he's in in this film. Don't get me wrong it's a bad film but the great acting is what kept me riveted while watching it. At the first act, the film tries to show me Roxanne Shanté's backstory which should be important but what I got instead are details about minor characters that don't have anything to do with the story but even that it was hard to figure out who's who. Also, there are a lot of in-your-face messages about racism. The character of Roxanne Shanté's mother is annoyingly stereotyped and the film gave her dramatic scenes which are so corny. The dialogue is so faked and stilted that it ruined some great acted scenes. There are many important turning points in the plot that are so rushed. (5/10)

LOTS OF GREAT NAMES BEHIND AND IN THIS MOVE, BUT THE EXECUTION OF THE STORY WAS AWFUL. THERE WAS NO ARC TO THE FILM

newcomer Chante Adams who plays Roxanne Shante is miraculous playing one of the most successful rappers of the 1980s and she was only 14 when she started making her own music to escape the abuse of her mother, the rough life of the projects, and to earn enough money to survive her whole intention was to insert the family vibe back into the music industry seeing that a lot of the men she knew were not living up to their responsibilities and not being good to their women no one receives flowers as a gesture anymore unless someone dies Nia Long is also spectacular playing her mother projecting onto her family since she was hurt so bad and mistreated by so many men in relatiation Chante wanted to be a kid but the chance for her to rap allowed her to grow up fast even if she wasn't ready for all of it it's really one of the rare biopics focusing on a strong woman whose influence really adds to the world of hip-hop feels long but breaks the traditional mold of similar stories portrayed

I love hip-hop history, but very few films ever get it right, with the exception of Wild Style, Style Wars, and Beat Street, no other film captured the hip-hop scenes. And unfortunately, Roxanne Roxanne didn't break the said trio's legacy. Just didn't feel like they were living in the times of 80s from the clothes to the hairdos. The lead girl was actually pretty good, but the directing wasn't very good. It was hard to figure out where they were sometimes and what they are doing and why. There was a failure by the writer to establish a good relationship. And the music was all off. 70s music when it was supposed to take place in the 80s. There was just a constant confusing as what time era we were in. Sometimes it felt the 80s, but then the music felt 70s and vice versa. The wrong wardrobes, which must have been done by people that didn't know the times, like the oversizes Adidas tracksuits and pulled down Kangol hats. All wrong. Too many close-ups. Maybe they were trying to avoid the 2000s scenery. There were also too many characters, which made it hard to follow. The movie was just poorly executed and was way too many scenes that were supposed to create an emotional connection were either forced or rushed or both. It's like this film was written and directed by someone that wasn't there at the time or just too young to have known the times the film takes place and then just adding a few words here and there they got from a Hip Hop lexicon. I.e. they read a hip-hop history book and then imagined what it was like. I was right after watching this. Just sad the subject matter wasn't handled properly. It could have been a great story if done right. Just too many things weren't believable. There was too much unnecessary resistance.

Not bad, but my issue is that they could have added an extra hour to show he back on the rise and how she finagled her record company to pay for her education at a University and her finally reaching her goals. Instead, they stopped when she got her child back and was in good standings with her mother. Another issue I have with the movie at the end there should have been content as to what happened after the end scene. You know the content that tells you what they did, wht they accomplished, Roxane's university degrees and so forth. They did none of that and for that I was disapointed.

best hip hop biopic made

Horrible. If you never heard of Roxanne shante and were hoping to learn of her... You're better off with a Google search. Exactly what this movie is about, I have no idea. A woman with an alcoholic mother that survived a domestic violence relationship and never made it as a rapper? I'm not sure ... Did she? Why is her story unique? This could be any woman's story, really. Hardly interesting. And why should I care about her poorly illustrated struggles, if you don't tell me her triumphs? Her importance and relevance to rap?

Gritty, violent bio of '80s rap star is ultimately hopeful.
