Robert Abele Los Angeles Times There’s an elegant severity to the natural elements that share the frame with the movie’s characters, manifested in silhouettes against vast cloudy skies, delicate snowfalls, shafts of light in dark interiors and crisp air filled with smoke and dust. May 5, 2025 Full Review Tim Teeman Times (UK) The film feels even more grim because guns and their use for violence are the predominant motifs in this 1880s-set western... Rated: 2/5 May 3, 2025 Full Review David Fear Rolling Stone The fact that Hutchins’ work here is the best thing the movie has going for it only compounds both the irony and the tragedy. May 2, 2025 Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo The Canadian Crew Rust doesn’t reinvent the wheel or break new ground like, say, Unforgiven. But for an indie movie marred by tragedy, the outcome is sturdy, enhanced by strong turns by Travis Fimmel and, yes, Alec Baldwin. Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2025 Full Review Tom Meek Film Threat Rust” makes for a passable Western sojourn that will forever be steeped in tragic ignominy. Rated: 2.5/4 May 9, 2025 Full Review Russ Simmons KKFI-FM (Kansas City) It’s a sad irony that the best thing about “Rust” is its atmospheric cinematography. Paul S Ive seen the word mediocre used to describe the picture. Its not one Id use. Travis Fimmel (Mr. Lang) and Josh Hopkins (Wood) stand out in an already very good ensemble. Its wonderful to see a very mannered Frances Fisher once again in distress regarding one of her offspring. Nice settings and production design. Lovely score. And yes many shots are a painful reminder that well not see Hutchinsons lending on a new film again. The family relation between Rust, Mrs. Bassett, her sister et al. was a little hard for me to follow. But theres family trauma poignance here regardless. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review John H After acknowledging the tragic production of this film, there is a good movie here with fine acting and an interesting plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Mitch G Beautiful and thoughtful and thought proviking Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review robyn We liked the movie. Its was a typical western.
