Scream 4 Reviews
The meta jokes are funny, the death scenes bring a suitably post-Saw level of gore, and the big twist is the best since the 1996 original. In short: it's a scream.

Scream 4 certainly does a give a voice to the disgruntled horror fans that have been disenchanted with what Hollywood has been serving up recently, now we just have to hope that they listen.

Scream 4 has the perfect opening to remark on a culture so saturated in meta-ness, irony, and social media that reality no longer has any meaning.

It is a clever reboot, reuniting writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven and honoring the original while embracing a fresh, new, and horrific new decade.

Unexpectedly prescient, Scream 4 is a marvelous return to form for the franchise with some razor-sharp commentary and thrilling bloodshed. Welcome back, Scream.

This film is a gift. It's not only prescient about the the dark pursuit of fans and celebrity, it's a faithful sequel with plenty of homages to the OG film. It's also packed with powerhouse female performances, particularly Emma Roberts

[A] post-post-modern, meta- meta-meta (this time there's even a movie-within-a-movie-within-this-movie) subversive horror Shriekquel.

[Craven and Williamson] observe technology as an extension, a funhouse mirror, of the silver screen. . . . [M]eta doesn't even cover it.

The opening scene is superb, once again mocking slashers and itself, this time with whimsicality and flair.

Fans of old school horror and suspense, think Hitchock or Powell, will find some interesting references in the film.

A fun and witty reminder of an old horror master's unparalleled talents.

Old meets new in the best, most genuine kind of way.
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 6, 2019
Where the film works best is in its sharp, self-aware attitude toward the rules of the horror genre, and can perhaps be forgiven its occasionally unexciting dialogue and ridiculous one-liners.

It doesn't always hit the vital organs, but it comes pretty close, and sometimes that's all it takes.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 4, 2018
The films true strength, though, lies in the young cast. Alongside [Hayden Panettiere's] Kirby are Kieran Culkin and Emma Roberts. Their performances elevate the film from simply a great movie to a rewatchable classic.

Its gimmicks haven't grown up, although its older fan base has.

A half-thought-out lark, the movie mocks and rejects every current trend of the genre.
