The Secret of My Success Reviews
As time passes by I find The Secret of My Success more of a fable about Capitalism, corporate ladders, Yuppies and 80s Reaganomics than this formulaic Rom-Com we were supposed to cruise through during its original release. And I totally dig that.

The latest in a line of American films endorsing the merits of being worldly, ruthless and rich, it wears its heartlessness proudly on its sleeve.

The picture has no remotely critical attitude towards its characters or their milieu. It merely celebrates the acquisitive world of unprincipled workaholic yuppies.

The Secret of My Success has too obvious an eye for the main box-office chance to be really successful either as farcical comedy or ironic social comment. But it's kind of fun.

This is a yuppie farrago about corporate raids and corpulent businessmen in which Fox plays the puppy.

With its clumsy bedroom farce and infantile sexual jokes, it is vulgar without being funny; and Herbert Ross directs it leadenly.

...without much details of business, morals or anything much, it's a bland, corporate-headed confection...

[A] Twinkie of a comedy...

"The Secret of My Success" turns out to be entertaining, despite its transparent plot and yuppie values.

The Secret of My Success lacks even the modest verbal wit that many Family Ties episodes contain.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 9, 2021
The Secret of My Success delivers, and in the fairy tale realm of wish fulfillment, this is what counts.

The multi-author screenplay grafts an unusually aggressive central character, a small ensemble of comical grouchy-friendly types, and an insightful satire on the tunnel-vision bureaucracy of corporate America.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Jun 9, 2021
A misfiring comic fantasia on business success in the Reagan era.

Fox is simply ridiculous; you keep waiting for Slater to giggle (and sure enough, she plays much of her part with otherwise unexplained smirks).

You don't need a Wall Street analyst to figure out that this wishy-washy yuppie comedy is a bad investment.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Jun 9, 2021
A ribald comedy brimming with impersonations, mistaken identities and conflicting romantic interests, heightened by Ross' sense for image and sound.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 9, 2021
The profound moral and spiritual emptiness at the core of The Secret Of My Success keeps it from being the dumb fun promised by its premise, title, and extensive use of Yello.

Fox is engaging as he runs around frantically trying to keep up the charade. Margaret Whitton, as the scheming boss's wife, steals the show, however...

''The Secret of My Success'' is crushingly bland.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Jun 9, 2021
Typically paper thin, the plot and the morality are blown away by the charms of the leading man and a soundtrack that has been hand-picked to get an audience on side. Unadulterated silliness, but harmless fun.
