Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Reviews
Precise and exempt from superfluity. [Full review in Spanish]

In its depiction of The End, it’s quite brave and oddly beautiful. The film takes hold of you all of a sudden and won’t let go. Before you know it, your eyes begin to tear up, and a lump develops in your throat.

So what do I make of a movie with tone issues, a draggy middle, and inconsistent humor but that still manages to entertain?
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 25, 2022
Lorene Scafaria has no capacity for the dramatics of positivity, and her determination to brush aside her more genuine comedic instincts for Instagram optimism is this film's deadly blow.

A deeper association with the lead duo is elusive, what with the pervasive reminiscing, brooding, and irrational behaviors that are never delirious enough to be funny.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World sought but never found a cineplex audience. Even so, I would personally advise that you add it to your queue of movies to see before the asteroid hits.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is a film that just about works. The emphasis here is on 'just about', however.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Feb 14, 2020
With uneven laughs, sensitivity and bittersweetness in one tidy package, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World is a credible directorial debut for Scafaria but it only becomes watchable after the first 45 mins.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 26, 2019
A jagged contraption of a narrative that never finds a comfortable or credible rhythm.
| Jul 31, 2019
Scafaria retools modern trappings with old formulas for mostly enjoyable effect. Just as long as you don't look at it too intently. Under close examination, you may recoil in disgust.

This convoluted rompocalypse seems unsure of what it really is, or indeed aspires to be.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 30, 2019
With her debut as director, [director Lorene] Scafaria has created something really unique.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Dec 29, 2018
The romance plays like a studio note and you barely believe it, but the movie wrapped around it is so watchable that you can let it be. This one last time.

How you feel about this movie may depend on whether you believe that Keira Knightley has a thing for John Cale.

That's where the brilliance of the film clicks in: What these characters are facing isn't all that different from the human prospect in general.
| Jun 20, 2018
It's a genre-defying melancomedy that manages to be good science fiction and a moving romance at the same time. Best of all, it never cheats you with false optimism about the fate of the world.

Could there be a more opportune time for this topic? Will that pack 'em in the theaters? Not likely. It's hectic while lacking tension, thus paradoxically ending up both irritating and boring simultaneously.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 30, 2016
Carell could have given the performance of his life (he doesn't), and the film would have remained a clich-ridden mess with a narrative built on convenience and coincidence.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 17, 2016
There's an entire world out there that's about to end, and this movie zooms in on the two least interesting people in it.
| May 12, 2015
Carell possesses a knack for these comedic-tinged dramatic parts, subtly layering on the pathos while slyly exploiting his character's vulnerability.
