Sequins Reviews
Another little movie focused on women's world: although women work hard, they work for life and to give birth to something...a baby or a family or a beautiful embroidery . Whatever will be, will be a masterpiece.
I'll just quote from my favourite movie blog: "Why is French cinema able to deliver films which other country's movie industry wouldn't even think about producing unless under torture?"
It's a slow moving film that feels as awful as Juno but this girl at the end does something more productive during her pregnancy. The movie is a fine work of art. The knitting is wonderful.
The main actress is GORGEOUS. Slow, sensuous, quiet. A very typical french filme. And that's why I love them!
A well done character study, this follows a young woman dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Claire (Lola Naymark) hides her pregnancy from her friends and family as long as she can and even changes jobs to prevent discovery. The job change provides Claire with the sanctuary she needs to begin to come to grips with her situation and to sort out her options, even as she helps her new employer come to grips with her own tragedy. The young actress captivated this viewer. She is quite beautiful with the most luxurious head of red hair this viewer can remember seeing. But her ability to communicate her hidden emotions non-verbally was extraordinary. Ariane Ascaride played her employer, Madame Melikian, and brought a quiet dignity to the role of a mother dealing with the loss of a child. The supporting actors offered solid performances that fleshed out the story. Some lovely scenery and interesting camera work complete the package.
This was the perfect mom-daughter watching movie (for me). It is all about relationships between women AND it is French. There isn't much of a plot, but the movie works pretty well as a portrait. The main characters magnificent fiery red curly hair and freckled comtemplative face fills the screen, and so does the stunning canvases she is embroidering on. It is a beautiful movie - so I guess the cinematography is good.
These two women are so lucky! They KNOW exactly their calling, their true passion, the beautiful art they create, enjoy and share... The embroidery art.
If you love rampant-curly redheads that dress like a boutique on fire, complete with head scarf, then this movie is worth the 88 minutes. If i had known the short shrift given to the titular embroidering i could have stopped looking for that and focused on the chicness and the hot hair and had a perfectly good time. Right up to the chopped off ending (the movie, not the hair). Good to look at, plot falters--but who can say no to redheads?
