Serenity Reviews
Couldn't stop watching it. Was on the edge of my seat quite frequently. You will never know what is happening I guarantee it. Matthew McConaughey is amazing and the casting was perfect. If you like a good thriller this is a must see !
I don't get the hate on this movie. Put it on randomly, and liked the cast, the idea, the twist, and the ending. I don't use Rotten Tomatoes to find movies to watch, rather just see what people thought of it after I saw it. Usually, I am never surprised by the critics' low ratings, but this made me think they don't know anything. It was a good film, will watch again with my kids just to see their faces at the twist. :)
I like it!! A bit of a crazy story to reach the plot/twist, but the message at the end gets me all choked up. I’ve watched it twice now! The acting is TERRIFIC too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. A couple of tacky tropes aside, it was engaging with enough of a twist that I would gladly watch this movie again. surprising it has the rating it has. Worth a watch!
Honestly, this is a surprisingly enjoyable movie, with an interesting concept, great actors, fluid plotting for a sci-fi. Does not deserve the bad press.
Failed the 20 minute test although I like McConaughey. Maybe if I were a tuna, I would have kept watching as it appears to have a remote connection to The old man and the Sea.
Halfway through this movie, the plot seemed a little silly. I think that is why the ratings here are so low. If you didn't stick around, or, if you formed your opinion of this movie at the halfway point, the current scores make sense. The 2nd half of the film, revealing the plot twist, makes the first act make sense. It's not perfect, but it is, an interesting enough idea. I recommend this film. Yes, Matthew McConaughey reprises his most famous (and only) role, playing... Matthew McConaughey. And nobody plays McConaughey as good as Matthew McConaughey. There is also a scene where McConaughey has a fantasy about skinny dipping with his adolescent son. Weird choice. But there is A good dramatic story being told, and has enough thrills and suspense to keep the pacing tight. The scoring on rotten tomatoes has become laughable. The two scores mean nothing anymore. "Brothers" was the worst film of 2024, and has a score on par with "Jaws." Give this one A try, it's far better than the score indicates.
A cross/mix of the matrix and the sixth sense
I don’t get the hate on this, they did a Truman Show/Matrix. It’s not great but not awful either.
I liked it. Glad I didn't read these reviews before I watched it. After reading the reviews most of the negativity revolves around " not what I expected, unnecessary sex, or I didn't get it. Compared to most of the crap I have to shift through on these streaming services to find a decent movie, this one's not bad IMO
Definetly does not deserve the ratings the movie received. It´s a decent story with a good twist. Worth a watch
This film exceeded in levels purely of an imagination off course of a writers perspective. It's like when you're writing a story about the main character narrating that they're the author of the story you're writing. Catches a very mild effect of plot twist to where you still wonder what's happening behind the eyes of the main character Patrick even during the ending. With trauma hiding behind computer screens Patrick plays a small yet largely immense part in the film never explaining how he even started the game to begin with.
I can’t believe that this movie didn’t get more attention. It’s exactly the type of movie I’ve been recently looking for and haven’t been able to find. Solid casting. Interesting concept. I’ll be watching it again.
[SPOILER ALERT] Shallow people always hate what they don't understand, and the overwhelmingly negative response from critics about Serenity is evidence of those critics' shallowness. They thought they were getting a steamy, sweaty, story of tropical intrigue, and were POed when it became something else. Well, they were getting what they thought--but the story was written by a 13-year-old boy. They complained about broad dialogue. Again, the 13-year-old creator, a computer genius who created the story to escape from the reality of his abusive stepfather, and designed a fantasy world game in which the main character is his deceased father, Baker Dill, a fisherman (brilliantly portrayed by Matthey McConaughey). What really annoyed those critics--who just wanted noir, steamy sex and light coming through venetian blinds--is that Serenity is actually an amazing journey into the existential. If you think of the world of Serenity as the real world, and its creator as our Creator, you might begin to understand what I'm getting at. Baker Dill has one consuming motivation--to catch a prize fish. Where did he get that motivation? His creator. So, where do you get your motivations? But Dill's motivation changes. He begins to feel a stronger urge--an urge to do something bad to accomplish something good. Where did that motivation come from? From the purposes of his creator, who is exploring those purposes through the characters in his game. Of which one is his father, who grapples with the meaning of his own existence as the truth of the game comes to light. And as we do, as the truth of the game on this earth comes to light. Great stuff. Give it a try. Be patient and drop all expectations. The truth will be revealed.
This movie proves that ratings are not the end all be all. Matthew provided an amazing performance that had me crying in the end. Beautiful and heart warming performance. Thank you.
The concept was compelling. Everything lined up for a great movie. But this just missed, plain and simple. Needed more from Hathaway, surprisingly she didn't deliver. Good try but no.
I gave this movie 2 stars only because Matthew is such a fine man & great actor. The storyline was good until the salesman comes along & throws the whole plot off. I could not follow the second half of the movie because it was so confusing!! I only understood the ending when I read the twist on-line.
It's not a totally bad movie but i wanted to like it more than i did. Sadly, the delivery was not good, took too long to get going, there were unecessary sex scenes and the concepts were never truly fleshed out. I don't mind slow burners, when they are interesting. Without spoiling anything: i imagine many people turning this movie off without seeing what it's actually all about. Near the end, as it FINALLY starts going, it has a really good concept, but by then, it's kind of too late and it leaves you frustrated because they should have focused on that stuff all along and fleshed out those concepts. It's kind of weird; like there were 2 totally different movies, written by 2 different people, and then someone decided to merge them, leading to a less than satisfying result. Or like it was written by AI or an old man trying to explain a foreign concept. It's a shame, because i love Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.
I think the critics missed the boat on this one. This is a wholy original concept. The movie is intense, scary, and a lot of fun to watch.
A movie where the twist doesnt work and since the twist is so terrible the entire movie looses all the promise it once had.
