Serenity Reviews
Hindered by such a weak and conceited script, I struggle to imagine any version of this that I would be able to take seriously.

When he reaches for the stars, Knight fails to catch anything, thus leading me to admire what this film could have been, instead of what we were given.

Serenity tries to go big and bold, but falls astonishingly flat. Plot holes, logical incongruencies, awful dialogues, terrible editing, hollow characters, and neglected subplots (...) one of the worst films of 2019.

…the over-heated melodrama in Serenity gives way to abstract cosmic ruminations in a glib, silly way that should provoke mirth in all those unlucky enough to set sail in with her crew…

Its weirdness seems to come from a desire not to give juicy pleasure but to provoke deep philosophical thought, and I’m afraid a thriller can commit no greater sin.

Have a mental margarita and strap in, because there hasn't been anything in the intervening 17 months that compares - not even Cats.

Episode 26: 2019 Movie Preview / Glass / Serenity / Velvet Buzzsaw / Coherence
| Original Score: 56/100 | Sep 9, 2021
The film's deranged twist doesn't just flip the narrative on its head, it practically tosses it into the sea and runs down the street naked, screaming the whole way.
| Original Score: 3 / 5 | Jun 25, 2021
Serenity's fleeting moments of fun absurdity and over-the-top performances aren't enough to make up for the odd, uncomfortable flatness that defines the rest of the film.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Feb 28, 2021
Its basic premise as a thriller barely works, as the shoddy pacing, editing, and character development manage to rob any potential for suspense.
| Original Score: 2/10 | Dec 7, 2020
A rewarding film for those patient enough to immerse themselves in it.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 22, 2020
[T]he movie gives away all of its deeper ambitions, leaving audiences to deconstruct its logical flaws and the outright absurdity in which it plays out.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jul 26, 2020
The movie can't figure out what it wants to be. Is it a nautical noir like "The Lady from Shanghai?" A high-seas adventure like "Moby Dick?" Or a "Lost" island fantasy? Knight just followed "Locke" with Locke, only this time there's no moving the island.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Jul 24, 2020
Serenity's noble attempt at baffling us cinematically might be too much style over substance for most.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 14, 2020
The concept execution is like watching someone slip with its own vomit and fall down the stairs in a hilarious way. [Full review in Spanish]

But view it first and foremost from the perspective of a video-game aesthetic and Serenity starts to make sense.

A fascinatingly disastrous big swing.

I didn't care for it.

Serenity is a bad noir effort that wastes all the great names attached to it.

It's sort of intriguingly bad... [But] it's worth seeing -- the cast is terrific.
