Shopgirl Reviews

Nov 11, 2024

My theory--this is Steve Martin's fifty something fantasy that he wrote between marriages. His blind spot is that he comes across as creepy. Story line is one star, but I gave an extra star so the review doesn't appear bitter.

I was excited to watch this movie because of Jason Schwartzman. However, this was the most boring, pointless film I've ever seen. Long, plotless shots with lifeless, cheesy music. Terrible dialogue, boring characters. 0/10

Not a bad movie, but this Steve Martin project does come across as being quite creepy.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Love the dynamics of it all. Very Artistic and Dark.

Sometimes I feel like critics just love a nice glass of wine to go along with a boring film . Acting was fine but that’s it . 1.8. Why did they gotta make Steve Martin such a prick you could tell it was unnatural for him . I feel like the goal was to try to make it kinda a gatsby esque film but they failed

Steve Martin has this subtle and nuanced way of being provactive and agile in his criticism while also allowing room for the human elements of life to play out. i think it's a raw and stunning portrayal of desire, learning and disapointment wrapped around beautiful performances.

Steve Martin thinks he's being literary by offering us snapshot monologues from his novella which are fake deep at best. The characters in this lover's triangle are all poorly developed creatures who do share one redeeming feature-all are miserably lonely. But what do we know of the girl-woman who sells opera gloves at Saks? And why is it that she's working there at all after graduating from a prestigious Vermont college? Strange. And funny how she has no boyfriend at the start of the film. The relationship between characters played by Martin and Danes is creepy and lecherous, as if Danes is kissing her snowy-haired grandfather. Can you say Daddy issues? This all feels forced, especially when Danes gets paid to strip to the buff to please the dudes in the audience. Claire, Claire, Claire. And there's absolutely no chemistry between Danes and Schartzman. I get the feeling that Steve Martin actually believes that he has delivered up a novella and matching film of literary significance, but what he actually has is a phony baloney chunk of writing that will soon be forgotten.

Very enjoyable! A drama heavier on rom than com. No shaky cam or speedy cutaways; the story blossoms slowly, but within lives of "quiet desperation". This film may remind you about that ONE relationship from the past - whether good, bad, or somewhere in between - that affected you so profoundly, it left an enduring impression with you...triggering memories that have become important contributors to who you are NOW. Everything from casting and dialogue to cinematography and editing was done effectively, ensuring my attention was not pulled away. Martin's writing here seems to emerge from a personal place of wisdom that generally comes with life experience and self-awareness - not strictly age alone. Viewers aged 30+ are more likely to relate to some of the heavier emotional issues, but younger audiences should enjoy the protagonist and her journey with two different men, boys...males. ;)

The story and the characters seem to imply that Shopgirl is a romantic comedy. The music and the cinematography, however, appear to think that this is an artsy drama film. And it's that disconnect which makes this movie not as good as it could have been. It just feels like something's off the entire time.

I first saw Shopgirl when it was released at a small theater in downtown San Fran in 2005. At the time, it was "okay". However, every year or so, when I rewatch it the movie grows on me. Mostly, it is Claire Danes' performance. Sometimes, I wonder what the movie would be like if it was told totally from Jeremy's perspective.;)

A very nice, tender love story based on a novella by sTeve martin. the cast is perfect: steve martin, claire danes, and jason schwartzman. it is a minor film in some ways, but beautifully filmed and with a great plot. certainly out of the ordinary and well worth the time to watch.

A lonely sales girl at the seldom visited glove counter has the misfortune of suddenly becoming the fixation of a poor dweeby slacker and a rich distant philanderer. Jason Schwartzman provides most of the Humour with his cluelessness, while Steve Martin Is more aloof and, dare I say it, bland then he's ever been. Considering that he actually wrote the story and play at the park, we must assume this is exactly how he wanted this character portrayed, but that doesn't contribute much to cinematic entertainment. A modest film yielding modest results.

interesting. I think it would have been better without the narration.

About par with the book, which isn't saying too much, since it was also only OK. There's no real motivation or backstory as to why Ray (Martin) would go after Mirabelle (Danes), or why she would find him appealing... Definitely needed more Schwartzman in it to make it funnier and charming. Not bad, but tries to be too serious/poignant at times, when it's just nothing extraordinary, really.

This film was unexpectedly sad but without the Hollywood melodrama.

Poignant and lovely.

Just didn't hold my attention. Danes' character is too boring.

Que buena actriz es Claire Danes una película deferente muy recomendable.

It starts out odd, turns depressing, but ends on a high note. An exceptional performance by Danes, her range of emotion is impressive. Schwartzman is delightfully sleazy, Martin is funny enough. Not a bad soundtrack either.
