Sid & Nancy Reviews

Sid and Nancy has some claim on being the finest British film of the 1980s.

| Sep 15, 2016

They are more than zombies doing needlepoint on each other's veins. Both are brought to life in complex, deeply felt performances from two actors who have abandoned themselves to enormously demanding and difficult roles.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Aug 9, 2016

Every character is booked through to hell or purgatory. But we gasp at the inventiveness, ferocity and cuckoo anarchy with which these rockers prepared their route to destruction or damnation.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2016

Sid & Nancy is an honorable try, but it could have been better had Cox found a way to imbue the movie with some of the sheer zaniness of his Repo Man.

Once we sense a glimmer of talent and accept these people as human beings, the tragedy of their drug use resonates enormously.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 9, 2016

This is a love story -- an unlikely, perverse, disturbing love story, but a genuine one.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 9, 2016

It's a hard film to watch at times, as Vicious plunges deeper into his heroin-induced slump, but told with skill and compassion, which make up for the onscreen squalor.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2016

The great DOP Roger Deakins works hard to make cramped, dank interiors look cinematic. Cox's humour, meanwhile, compensates for the grim subject matter.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 9, 2016

A gruellingly tough watch.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 8, 2016

The film stars Gary Oldman as Sid and Chloe Webb as Nancy, both dialled up to 11 on the acting-ometer, perhaps as manic and irritating as their characters were.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 5, 2016

The storyline is grim and morbid but is leavened by the humour.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 4, 2016

It's fascinating to hear the Sex Pistols' No Feelings again. This film makes me think it's their most powerful track.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Aug 4, 2016

Well put together, but something of an ordeal to get through.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 2, 2016

Just a teensy bit tiresome: two addled junkies falling about and bellowing at each other for 112 long minutes.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 1, 2016

Sid and Nancy is the definitive pic on the punk phenomenon.

| Apr 28, 2008

A few too many moralistic foreshadowings, but most of the time Cox's situations and characters develop on their own eloquently entropic terms.

Why then should anyone of sane disposition wish to see the film? Because it is still a love story, and a very touching one at that.

It's not every film maker who credits special thanks to both Luis Bunuel and Dee Dee Ramone, but then Mr. Cox doesn't fit any recognizable mold.

A haunting love story about a mutually self-destructive and harrowing pair.

| Mar 10, 2003

[Cox] and his actors pull off the neat trick of creating a movie full of noise and fury, and telling a meticulous story right in the middle of it.
