Silent Waters had moments when you felt that it was going to become a great film but never reached the greatness you expected. The story of a family torn by the religious extremism Silent Waters is a good film that never became as great as it should have been,

The infamous partition that tore apart a country and made it two. Families from both countries unable to forget that treacherous year; feeling the effects for generations after. For anyone from the lineage of either of the two countries this movie hits you like a ton of bricks. Heartaches, sadness, and pain this movie has it all; it's all too real.

Small-scaled look at the price paid in the face of the increasing Islamist fundamentalism of Pakistan. Effectively intimate, the film works best in reveling in the small details of its place and time. Perhaps a little hard to parse for those more ignorant to 20th century Pakistani history, yet it provides lots of nuances for us to ponder: the son's discontent with the lack of economic choices in rural Pakistan, the mother's disillusionment with the sexism of both Islam and Sikhism, etc.

Beautiful film that deals with the remnants of the issues of partition. Family secrets are unveiled when Sikh pilgrams arrive in Pakistan and the eldest son goes fundamentalist. Saddening.

What a well made movie. The story is as close to reality as it gets. Makes you angry, cry & think. Is hatred necessary? Can we ever learn to live with each other without feeling threatened? The gradual transformation of the free village into a conservative one by a bunch of holligans is very smartly shown. The village characters and their interesting conversations reflecting the views of the locals, the Sikh visitors and their connection to the village, the pathetically lost Salim and his friends whom I felt only pity for and the tragic story of partition shown via his mother Ayesha's character ... all these play upon so many different levels that it makes this movie a great one. Must watch.

Totally blown away. Extremism has and will continue to destroy us all.

Gripping, yet I could have sworn it started losing its soul at the end. And I wish we revisit these characters again.

Surviving the horror of the Partition...to struggle with it in the present...The film looks at the ever present, subtle and insidious threat of cruelty and violence that bubbled to the surface during the Partition as a miasma that can easily trickle out with a little help from bigotry, dissatisfaction and unhealed memories... and how it inevitably targets the most vulnerable...in this case...the women. Understated and moving.

Three decades after independence dictator general brings radicalism and orthodoxy into the country, how it affects people and the plight of women, and how men change into intolerant radicals with the pretext of religion. A very touching story with lots of history.

Nice story.. Emotional and a thorough reflection of the reality or the effects of partition. Islamic movements and the building of terror outfits.

Intersting! It dissapoints though by playing it by book (the Qur'an, if you will) too closely; Kiron Kher, however, liberated herself from the mellow plot and absolutely soared!

One of the very rare brilliant movies made in Pakistan in the recent times. The movie showcases the start of fundamentalism in Pakistan in Zia's era. It's Kirron Kher's movie all the way as she excels in the character of Ayesha. The other artists have done a great job too. It's one of my personal favorites!

A must see film which will take you by surprise. Mostly Pakistani cast but with Kiron Kher as one of the main characters. Good acting with a very good story line. It shows the fall out after the partition and how peoples lives are changed depedning on which side of the border they end up at. Enjoy the movie.

A depressing but unsettling Pakistani (Punjabi) film about the slow onslaught of Islamic fundamentalism in the country in the late 1970s.

A kind of silent, slow but moving film about a Sikh woman left behind in India during Partition.

An excellent movie that was brilliantly acted, with well-thought out direction. It does require a knowledge of Indian/Pakistani history, and a grasp of the culture to appropriately understand the point of the film, and why the characters are so brilliantly played. Without a doubt one of the best partition movies I've ever seen - far superior to Deepa Mehta's offering of Earth, which was decent but focused on an outsider's view of the turmoil. I think watching the film about a Punjabi village as a member of the culture makes a huge difference. A

Good story and insight into Pakistan as to when Pakistan made a turn towards Islamic Nationalism and Fundamentalism. Is totally relevant today especially concerning the current War on Terrorism and the troubles in Pakistan.

Beautifully poignant movie on the politics of hate that stems from manipulation of history, bloody rhetoric and poverty. Kirron Kher puts in a superb yet understated performance. Must see.
