Snake Eyes Reviews

Dec 31, 2024

Starring Nicolas Cage as a corrupt Atlantic City police officer who must solve a murder of the U.S. Defense Secretary. Gary Sinise plays a Navy officer and friend to Cage’s character. As usual, these two deliver a great performance. There is also some great cinematography in this movie, with point of view shots, over the head shots, and some really long take shots at the beginning of the movie. The plot does drag on a bit. As Cage’s character starts to figure things out I thought the end was near, but that just started the third act. There is some great stuff here, but I think that the enjoyment of the movie would be limited to those who can appreciate the cinematography and hang on to the plot until the end.

The terrible ratings shocked me because I found Snake Eyes a very intriguing and entertaining thriller. The intricate plot and solid performances make up for the film's slow pace. It's not one of de Palma's best, but it's certainly not bad.

Not great but not terrible. There's alot to like here. Interesting camera work. Classic Nick Cage being Nick Cage. Gary Sinise is always a pleasure. Plots a little thing but still enjoyable. Vastly better story telling than the terrible stuff that's being coming out the last few years.

Awesome movie, never has a boring moment. While there are some things a little hard to believe, it's still a pretty good movie.

Snake Eyes! Even though my brother Daniel saw a person who is from Transformers in this piece of sxxt! The opening is boring, but I do like the sound effects and the part where Nicolas Cage says " To give you a b£££r". It's just a boring boring film.

Brian De Palma directs an unsung masterpiece of suspense. The starting scene catapults us into this world of intrigue with a long unedited scene that plays for many minutes, following Nicholas Cage into this underworld of gambling, drugs, and corruption. This film is truly riveting, and captivates any keen audience. One of Nicholas Cage's greatest performances.

A solid mystery thriller that gives the viewer more and more information as the movie goes by showing the same events from several different perspectives. The third act is a little slow and the runtime is maybe 20 minutes too long, but overall, an interesting plot combined with Nic Cage makes for an enjoyable watch.

The action scenes were too much and the main character failed to convey any emotions. A very dull experience, that feels like it was made for kids.

Everything is scummy in Snake Eyes, even the things that at first appear not to be. The tagline on the VHS cover is true. Believe everything except your eyes. Everything is scummy. Great movie. Not sure why people disliked it so much.

Underrated film. Love the murder/conspiracy plot and the performances from Cage and Sinise. Fun movie.

I liked it, Cage is maximum Cage and Gary Sinese is fantastic in support. It's an underrated mystery that delivers with great camera work and a good twist. Probably overshadowed by some of Cage's other films of the 90s but this one is worth a watch.

On a dark and stormy night, corrupt, flamboyant Atlantic City police detective Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage) attends a boxing match at Gilbert Powell's (John Heard) Atlantic City Arena between heavyweight champion Lincoln Tyler (Stan Shaw) and challenger Jose Pacifico Ruiz. He meets up with his best friend since childhood, Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise), who is a U.S. Navy Commander, working with the Department of Defense to escort Defense Secretary Charles Kirkland (Joel Fabiani) and Powell at the fight after a trip to Norfolk, Virginia. As the first round begins, Kevin is distracted by an attractive redhead named Serena (Jayne Heitmeyer) who wears a ruby ring, and leaves his seat, which is then taken by Julia Costello (Carla Gugino), a mysterious woman with platinum blonde hair and a white satin suit. When Tyler is unexpectedly knocked out by Ruiz, gunshots ring out, mortally wounding Kirkland and grazing Julia, who loses her glasses and blonde wig, revealing her naturally dark hair. Kevin kills the sniper and orders the arena to be locked down. Despite the lockdown, Julia escapes into the casino, covers her wounds in pieces of cloth from her blouse and, after stealing a black satin jacket, disguises herself as a hooker. Rick notices that the "knocked out" Tyler woke up instantly when the shots rang out and, after studying the fight tape, realizes the knockout punch didn't connect. Tyler confesses that he threw the fight in order to pay gambling debts, but he was never told that anyone would be killed and reveals that he was paid to take a dive by Serena, the redhead who tricked Kevin into leaving his post. With the involvement of Tyler, Serena and the sniper—in addition to the man who signaled Tyler to go down and whoever gave him the go-ahead—Rick suspects a conspiracy and reveals everything he has learned to Kevin. The commander confesses that the trip to Norfolk was for a test of the AirGuard missile defense system, which Powell's company was backing. He deduces that the sniper, a known Palestinian terrorist named Tarik Ben Rabat, assassinated Kirkland over the Pentagon's large-scale defense cooperation with and weapons systems transfers to Israel. Rick studies surveillance footage to find Serena while, with the help of Powell's security guards, Kevin continues his search for Julia. However, once they split up, it is revealed that Kevin is actually the fifth party and mastermind of the conspiracy. He kills the now-blonde Serena and Zeitz (the man who signaled Tyler to go down) in order to prevent their further involvement and then conceals their bodies with the help of his bodyguards. Kevin then enlists Tyler by revealing the truth to him... Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus: "Snake Eyes has a number of ingredients that promise a trashy fun time; unfortunately, they're lost in an energetic and stylish thriller with a frustratingly hollow core." De Palma himself responded to the criticisms in an interview with Mark Cousins, "There's a lot of discussion in Snake Eyes about why do we reveal who did it so soon. Well, the problem is that it isn't about who did it. It's a mystery about a relationship, two people, and how finding that out affects their relationship ... those kinds of procedural movies are extremely boring..." "Snake Eyes" is hardly amongst Brian de Palma´s better films. Generic storyline that hardly excites nor entertains. And it never ends... Nicholas Cage and Gary Sinise are on autopilot. Cage over the top as well. Nice cinematography (as always when it´s a Brian de Palma film) and the presence of the lovely Carla Gugino. The film garnered mixed reviews from critics, criticizing the film's story, writing and pacing while praising its style and the performances.

Has potential but it loses steam.

In my younger years, this was one of the movies that taught me that even if a movie seems to have all the elements that should make it the greatest movie ever... it may not reach that expected level. I'm not exactly sure why this is just kinda ‘meh.' I guess that means there was a lot wrong with it, even the credits scenes with the construction workers... wtf was that???

I enjoyed the movie.. yes its very 90's but still a decent movie

An underrated mystery/crime film where Nicolas Cage has a ton of fun and Gary Sinise was pretty good as well.

Jan 24, 2021

Unfortunately Snake Eyes, despite being a perfectly entertaining film, has always taken a back seat when compared with Cage's work in the greatest unintended trilogy of all time: The Rock, Face/Off, and Con Air.
