The Song of Sparrows Reviews
Wish all films could have so much heart. Shows how materialism can ruin your life if you don't pay attention to what is really important.
This movie is pure poetry! Magnificent, resonant! This is top notch cinema!
My second Majidi film and one of my few ambassadors of Iranian films. It's similiar too "Rang-e khoda" as they both involves kids with limitations. They also share many similiar themes and subplots. I got a feeling that many of his films are in the same style, and that's not a bad thing. Karim, the family leader and father is working at an ostrich ranch but he ends up without a job. At the same time his daughter ruins her hearing aid and needs a new one. This is too expencive for the family so it's not a great time to lose a job. Luckily he finds new ways to earn money but he may not be the best spender. A younger kid in the family is always in trouble as well even of his actions are ment well. A trip to a very different culture than mine and a sweet story with many great moments. Basicly about life, life values and the hope of something better. Still a film about a lot more. 7.5 out of 10 blue doors.
The simplicity is amazing, all Iranian movie I have watched rely on simple, humanistic and heartfelt story telling, and The Song of Sparrows is no exception. If you miss down-to-earth movie, this is your chance to take a break from those flashy blockbuster movie.
A simple and moving tale of Karim , whose transformation forces you to explore one's own alienation and existence in an urban, fast-paced city life. The film moved me to a point where a torn polythene bag of fruit makes you go "noo". You end up rooting for him in a silent, prayer kind of a way by the time you sit though the 1.37hr movie which takes you on a roller coaster ride of culture-shock (bike-cabs!) and emotions of sorts. Well worth a watch !
At times funny, sad, poignant and suspenseful, Sparrows is a showcase for Majidi's masterful storytelling -- and Naji's superb acting.
When an ostrich-rancher focuses on replacing his daughter's hearing aid, which breaks right before crucial exams, everything changes for a struggling rural family in Iran. Karim motorbikes into a world alien to him - incredibly hectic Tehran, where sudden opportunities for independence, thrill and challenge him. But his honor and honesty, plus traditional authority over his inventive clan, are tested, as he stumbles among vast cultural and economic gaps between his village nestled in the desert, and a throbbing international metropolis.
Now i had really high hopes with this one..! But unfortunately Majid Majidi couldn't create that charm as he did before. The plot moved randomly here and there with few good scenes but it roamed aimlessly without a particular pace.
There is a great poetry heart acting an realization in this movie. However the movie feels too much tedious and ultimately despite its touching story it lacks the power to involve us into the story and make us enjoy it entirely.
The Song of Sparrows is about ostrich-rancher Karim being fire from his jobs as he struggles to support his rural family in Iran. It tells a simple story in an effective manner. This film feature characters that are simple becoming more dynamic through the course of the film. These characters are wonderfully portrayed by the actors making this film a joy to watch. The actors make this a film worth investing in alone. It's visually interesting, heart wrenching, fun, and most important of all captivating. There's never a dull moment in this well made Iranian film. The Song of Sparrows is a must watch for any movie lover. It's simple story that convey many emotions and in very artistic and heartfelt story that is easy to enjoy. Not much else to say, except go see it if you have not already.
More proof to the fact that iranian cinema is hopeless, sentimental, shallow & cliche approach to the cliche 'city life corrupts' thing plus some other uninteresting themes that none of them has been explored well, The film's few interesting & good moments are the ones with Karim & the Ostriches & there a few impressive sequences here & there, Also those spoiled kids with their stupid dream were annoying as hell
Pretty good movie. The way of story telling is what the movie is all about and visually interesting too. Its much more like a short film which conveys a message.
Original story. Well-executed by Majid Majidi. This is devastating and depressing and the ostriches provide an interesting counterpoint/visual metaphor to the busy life in the city.
A wonderful film. Beautiful cinematography. Great sense of humor. Heart-wrenching investment in the characters.
Many fine qualities in this film. Unfortunately, the ending felt incomplete and unsatisfying. With a bit more work on the ending, the film could have been fantastic.
Another master piece from the Iranian film maker Majid Majidi, "the song of sparrows" is a poetic fable of an honest but poor man who loses his job and accidentaly finds a job as a taxi driver in the city. More the time he spends in the city more he is transformed and loses sight of his priorities. Excellent performance from Reza Naji and the children.
A film that could only be seen at a number of film festivals and that's why I am thankful there are Film Festivals. This movie is from Iraq and its about a man who works on a ostrich farm until one gets away, then he goes to Tehran where he is mistaken for a motorcycle cabbie. Just an over all good movie about life of one man in Iraq. 5 Stars
The Song of Sparrows (آواز گنجشکها ) Iranian movie directed by Majid Majidi. At Asia Pacific Screen Awards this film won Best Actor for Reza Naji. This movie was an entry at Academy for Best Foreign Language Oscar Award; at Berlin International Film Festival, it won Silver Bear for Best Actor for Reza Naji. Karim (Reza Naji) is a man who works at an ostrich farm until he is fired because one of the ostriches fled from his workers grip. He looks for new job in largest city Tehran, this puts him to several experiences of life in big city, meeting immoral people, people running at fast pace to their work. He is an struggling man, to feed his family of housewife, elder daughter (who is partially deaf), younger son and daughter. These events are so artistically portrayed in the film, that it has no artificial look of the filming at all. Naji's gave surprisingly wonderful performance. A must watch film! NOTE: Re-watched 2nd time
