Sour Grapes Reviews
The topic of the documentary is amazing and the production is honest about it but it felt like it felt short of really uncovering the really interesting story behind it.
The greatest 01 hour: and 26 minutes with real footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this after reading about Petrus Winery in an autobiography by Stevan Pierce. When reading about it I read an article about the amazing history of the winery and this movie was cited. It was Informative and interesting despite it being predictable. I was sad when they destroyed all the bottles of fake wine since they would have been collector's items. I think Rudy would be interesting to meet and he should start his own winery given his great palette. It was on Hulu.
Pretty good! What a strange world top-tier wine collecting and auctions is--wow! Tjis guy is essentially a genius master art aficionado and forger---but the art is wine. Fantastic, unusual story and really well told. Nicely made documentary -- maybe even 4.5 stars.
Awesome movie that peels back the pretentiousness of the elite wine world. The documentary does a great job highlighting the disbelief of the friends that claim they can taste the real wine even to this day.
It's a fascinating doc about wine and a wine dealer. Won't say anymore than that. For wine enthusiasts it's a must see, but even true crime lovers will get a kick out of this. It's interesting from beginning to end.
Very interesting story, like many interviewed i believe we are not hearing the whole story. Hard to believe one man could do all this alone.
Grows into ludicrous, impressive, and almost-unsurprising portraits of lonely characters with too much money to burn and the man who took advantage of them. Laurent Ponsot charges through as the hero, with theatricality ingrained in his personality.
This is a doc. about wine primarily a wine counterfeiter his friends he conned plus some of the people that got ripped off hence the documentary name Sour Grapes. It was good.
I cannot say enough good things about this documentary. It is more proof that men are not qualified to rule or play any dominant position in this world. Follow this up with THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM
This documentary flick elevates the art of wine collecting. Focusing on the craft and care that has been constantly evolving since wince has been corked. An elitist society of wealthy wine connoisseurs meet this unlikely novice who moves into the wine market buying up rare vintage like it's art work. Setting new prices, finding rare fines, Rudy becomes integrated into the wine clubs earning the trust of those who have been in the wine scene for decades. Then it becomes clear to certain people. Doing some research, Rudy's fabricated world becomes questionable. Like an onion, one layer at a time, his world comes crashing to a halt. Is it possible to manufacture vintage wine? Yes. And to that, Rudy's elite world once created with envy is put into a cell. Much like the deep and dark wine secrets of the 18the century that Rudy so craftily created to sell to the highest bidder, and to falsely inflate what was a sequestered little society of wine enthusiasts. Rudy a wine forger is put into jail. Stripped away of all the glamour that is his yang. This movie follows the wonder of a wine world that many wouldn't even venture. Let's face it, wine is for drinking with a nice cheese. But it can be for collecting. Just to say you "have it." Even if the wine these elitists hold is fraud.
Very entertaining. Can't vouch for accuracy or comprehensiveness but was convincing. Comedic in style, serious in tone, suspenseful to the end (if you didn't Wikipedia the villain first).
Good Documentary about the Counterfeit Wine industry and the suckers that pay STUPID amounts of money for wine. I always love a good documentary about a con-man that NOBODY can believe he would do something like this .
I know nothing about wine. not that it should be a prerequisite for watching this documentary, but maybe you might enjoy it even more as a "connoisseur". this is an insightful look at an extremely charming con man who managed to schmooze with the rich and counterfeit millions of dollars worth of wine. very entertaining!
The moral of the story is that any "authentic experience" is aided by signs of pedigree that can be manufactured as to give the impression of authenticity. The feeling you get from the imitation may be just as real as the real thing
