Spring Breakers blends stinging social commentary with bikini cheesecake and a bravura James Franco performance.

Adam Nayman The Ringer Whether [it] is a great movie or an uncommonly accomplished bit of fraudulence is an eye of the beholder thing, but there’s something to be said for a film that somehow captures and enshrines an era’s attention-deficit aesthetic... Mar 25, 2023 Full Review Brittani Nichols Autostraddle Is it social commentary on today's young adult culture? I don't see how. Is it satire? I surely wish it was. Instead this was an earnest try at something...I don't know what. Jun 15, 2021 Full Review J. Hoberman The New York Review of Books Spring Breakers is a crowd-pleaser, although given its confounding creepiness, the crowd it pleases most is surely the forty-year-old filmmaker's intellectual fan base. Mar 8, 2019 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Somebody please nominate James Franco for some sort of award. His character of Alien in Spring Breakers was perhaps the most entertaining character we saw all year. Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It’s Bonnie and Bonnie and Bonnie and Clyde with Day-Glo color, teen exhibitionism, and gangsta street violence, with a pop music score and a hip-hop mixmaster soundtrack and editing style. David O way more art house than initially anticipated. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Jesse Put this in theaters every spring break. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Matt SELENA GOMEZ!!! That’s the movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Stephen L Spring Breakers is a bold, dreamlike descent into excess – a film that blurs the line between social critique and hypnotic indulgence. Harmony Korine directs with striking visual flair, delivering a collage of sound, color and mood that’s hard to forget. James Franco is mesmerizing as Alien, and the casting of Disney-alum actresses gives the film an edge that feels deliberate and smart. Not all of it works – the pacing can test patience, and the repetition may alienate some – but there’s no question this is a fearless piece of filmmaking. Whether you find it brilliant or baffling, Spring Breakers earns points for originality and daring. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Jarrin R Quite the wild ride of showing what happens when you truly let go inside. You start out doing one thing wrong and things just spiral from there. Spring Breakers is the two oformentioned things on film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review r96 s 'Spring Breakers'... deary me. An absolutely terrible movie! It plays out like it is attempting to be a parody of these sorta sex-infused crime movies, but as far as I can tell it's an actual attempt at one - which means it's simply cringe all the way through. There isn't much to say about the cast, given their and the film's low quality. James Franco is rubbish, one of the worst parts I've seen portrayed. The characters of Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine just go round in circles, practically. It's a movie that attempts to show an aesthetic and tries to leave a deeper meaning. I can't personally believe that it could actually be interpreted like that, but evidently some people do see it as a success in those areas so, I guess, fair enough. For me, it's just awful. I'll give it praise for a single scene: the one with Britney Spears' "Everytime" playing over it, that was actually fairly well done. See, I'm not a total hater.
