Set ten years after the events of "The Phantom Menace," the Republic continues to be mired in strife and chaos. A separatist movement encompassing hundreds of planets and powerful corporate alliances poses new threats to the galaxy that even the Jedi cannot stem. These moves, long planned by an as yet unrevealed and powerful force, lead to the beginning of the Clone Wars -- and the beginning of the end of the Republic.

Critics Consensus

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones benefits from an increased emphasis on thrilling action, although it's undercut by ponderous plot points and underdeveloped characters.

Chris Hewitt (UK) Empire Magazine Clones is the anti-Phantom Menace — funny, complex and enormous fun. Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Jane Horwitz Washington Post The computer-generated effects dazzle, and the story, while complicated in the manner of a comic-book serial, clips along at a decent pace. Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Honolulu Star-Bulletin Staff Honolulu Star-Bulletin George Lucas should seriously think of handing over the director duties to someone else for Episode III. All of this digital effect dazzle can't even spark his weak work with actors. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Michael Tsai Honolulu Star-Advertiser George Lucas continues to show signs of being altogether unconcerned with the burden of storytelling, using painfully awkward dialogue and endless coincidences to advance the plot. Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Michael Snyder Miami Herald Attack is more of the same; the thespians are pawns subservient to the epic sweep of the story. But after a tepid Episode 1, this is rapture. David M A second film in a series often doubles down on the first film; unfortunately George Lucas, clearly a man in desperate need of someone to tell him 'No' by this stage, doubles down on all the wrong things. Even more CGI, that's often even more badly executed; a meandering plot and embarrassing screenplay that scarcely bothers to develop characters; whole sections where almost nothing happens, and when things do happen, it's unclear why it's happening at all. Worst are the scenes between Padame and Anakin, which seem to be written by a 12-year old boy with an underdeveloped understanding of human relationships. The final 30-minutes or so are passably enjoyable, with a degree of peril, visual flair and a much needed sense of fun amidst all the po-faced nonsense. But it's too little, much too late to save a film that scarcely works on any level. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Nerd W Even More Epic Music, Even Better Fight Scenes. Dooku… Say No More Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Christopher L A fun movie to watch if you can get through the bland dialogue and wooden delivery from most of the actors. A missed opportunity to develop a tragic storyline for Anakin, but looking back at the prequel trilogy now is a much different experience after having endured the Disney sequel garbage. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Jun L Improved from episode 1. There is more drama which adds to the story, and adds a little bit of intrigue. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review AK K Great characters but the plot meanders a little much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Chapman S It was another good Star Wars movie. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad. (for the majority of it) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
