Stockholm Reviews
…a likeable proposition for thriller fans, a tense and humorous drama drawn from the headlines with enough wit and panache to keep the action compelling…
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 16, 2024
Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace‘s undeniable chemistry is the foundation of the film, and it is also the glue that holds it together.

It is a difficult task to produce an original twist on the genre. Which is ironic given this is the story that inspired it all. However Budreau uses the staging to create an effective sense of claustrophobia and builds the bond between captor and hostage.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 10, 2022
A fairly light indie comedy that could probably dig a little deeper into its story and characters but seems perfectly content to just have fun.

Enjoyable caper, but that's about it.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 4, 2021
One of those films that is absorbing enough to push viewers to read up on the source material - a larger-than-life ordeal as fascinating as it is outlandish.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 7, 2020
Ethan Hawke proves that he not only can he perform in any film genre including comedy, and he can do it well.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Nov 18, 2020
Stockholm is a succinct and endearingly goofy take on the heist genre.

Routine and unimaginative. [Full review in Spanish]

...a good-enough look into the origins of a real-life psychological phenomenon...
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 5, 2020
The talent involved means The Captor is always watchable, but it's never anything more than that.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 28, 2019
Hawke and Rapace (the original Lisbeth Salander) manage some chemistry in their scenes together, when not being held hostage to the creaky plot mechanics.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jul 11, 2019
It's fun watching Ethan Hawke's oddball robber socking it to The Man in a wig and stick-on handlebars.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 26, 2019
The ever watchable Ethan Hawke is the best thing in this crime caper. It's uneven and lacks the power of its premise but always manages to keep your attention hostage.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 26, 2019
Budreau's film is fitfully entertaining, at its strongest on the similarity between Stockholm syndrome... and what most of us would simply call "a movie romance."
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 24, 2019
Director Robert Budreau doesn't take it entirely seriously, leaving us with something that is always interesting but lacks jeopardy.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 24, 2019
From its gaudy 70s costuming to its goofy, wobbling tone, everything about this film feels uncomfortably broad.

It may not all be true or indeed the complete story, with little of the aftermath re-enacted, but Hawke makes you wish it was.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 21, 2019
Age becomes Ethan Hawke. The more raspy and wrinkled he gets, the better he is on screen... And here he holds together a film that is shaky in many respects and shouldn't work.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 21, 2019
Budreau finds more than a little comedy in all of this. Indeed, he introduces his film with the caption 'Based on an absurd but true story'. That's spot on.
