Very nice movie. The very first scene is really slow, but don't worry, the rest of the film is not like that. Great movie if you want to chill and just not think about anything negative.

David Lynch directed the biographical road adventure drama. The film's ending credits the film in Alvin Straight's memory, whose true account of a 240-mile ride from Iowa to Wisconsin on a lawn mower in 1994 serves as the basis for the film. Richard Farnsworth stars as Alvin, Sissy Spacek plays Alvin's daughter with developmental difficulties, and Harry Dean Stanton as Alvin's brother, whom he visits after Lyle suffers a stroke. The film is one-of-a-kind from David Lynch, who was previously known for his dark crime thrillers. The movie explores familial relationships and individuals' goodwill to strangers, particularly elderly people and young. Alvin's journeys along the route teach people who have gone astray valuable lessons. As an example, he gives a life lesson to the runaway expectant girl he encounters at midnight while camping that if she stayed with her family, she would be more comfortable and cared for by her loved ones, much as sticks cannot be broken together. A humble narrative with stunning photographs of the Midwest's countryside and farmland.

Great movie really love it

It drags on longer than needed, but The Straight Story packs a lot of heart.

A smooth, comforting cinematic back massage , if you will, that excels on every level. Farnsworth, in all his poetic, gentlemanly stoicism simply shines.

The Straight Story is a beautifully made film, filled with wonderful characters who eloquently reveal Lynch’s inner feelings of love and compassion for humanity.  It’s also one of the best films David Lynch made.  Highly Recommended. detroitcineaste

Slow paced tale of an exciting adventure a man takes to reconnect with brother, he can't even remember why they fought. Along the way he connects with people he passes sharing his life knowledge and learning a few things himself.

A film to bring in the New Year when hope is needed. I first saw this absolutely wonderful movie on News Years day in the year 2000. I now own a copy & have watched it often over the years & once again this time bringing in the 2025 New Year. Lynch is not a real favorite of mine as a director but this piece of work shows a side of him that I can really relate to. Some of his other films I find interesting in their unusual narrative & technical complexity but they do not affect me like this one. What is remarkable as well is how real & moving this true story is but without any cheap sentiment whatsoever in its presentation. Farnsworth has his finest 110 minutes as an actor here & everyone in the cast, especially Sissy Spacek, whether they are trained actors or not come across superbly & all elements in the film from music to the cinematography contribute to the films beauty. I will watch this film over & over & its impact + subtle message concerning upbeat but affectingly real human interaction I will cherish forever. Reviewed by Peter Graham

An emotional roadtrip of a film.

David Lynch makes one of those road trip self-discovery stories This acts as a slow building character piece It takes a good 30 min for the plot to kick off Yet it’s the story of a man embracing the true meaning of brotherhood and the face value of America He’s not the most complicated man, he’s actually very simple A few issues are still present; I fail to see it as a Disney film and considering it’s by a fairly versatile director like Lynch It’s also way too long for its own good although it does exist to challenge the viewer looking at film in a whole new light Lord knows why this got such rave reviews but I guess that’s how Lynch goes in this medium

David Lynch's only family friendly film, which makes it wildly different than his other films, especially the ones he made right before and after it. Even though this is Lynch's only film like this, he still does an incredible job, making it one of his best films. It's cozy, heartwarming, and at times incredibly emotional. The Straight Story is a must see from Lynch, given that it's his most accessible.

A good screenplay, one of Lynch's finest work. Must watch.

Based on a true story of a septuagenarian, Alvin Straight, who crosses Iowa to get to Wisconsin to see his ailing brother on a lawn mower. This movie starts a little slow, then picks up a little once Alvin gets on the road. The movie takes its time to allow the audience to breathe and digest the dialogue and what is happening on screen. There are a lot of scenes that have long moments of just silence as two characters just share the moment and I found that I enjoyed that, to a point. Being from Iowa and Wisconsin, I appreciated the on location filming and a few Iowa references. This film has a lot of heart, made even more special knowing that it is based on real events. Definitely worth a watch!

David Lynch's most subversive film. Lynch generally enjoys rubbing the audience's nose in the muck beneath the surface of society. In this movie, he tells a simple story devoid of any harsh moral dilemmas. He takes Frank Capra wholesomeness to a cosmic level and delivers a movie that is jaw-dropping in both its simplicity and the raw, emotional underpinning of the plot. In a sea of entertainment designed to humiliate and depress the audience, this movie stands out in its ability to affirm the small adventures we take in life to improve and/or correct relationships that are important to us. A truly radical, subversive effort.

One of the best road movies of all time and a All Time Classic. It's character study on top of a road movie adventure. The acting, cinematography, musical score is incredible. With really good editing and a perfect lesiurely pace that you glide along too. It's such a simple setup and we learn about Alvin as the journey continues and the acting is so strong that even though no action happens, you can't turn away because of how well directed, how well acted, and interesting Alvin and the story is. It feels like a dream at points while he's on the road in between encounters with other people who help him along the way. The dialouge is really good as well. It's difficult to explain but it somehow manages to be engaging and moving with such a simple story with very little meandering even though most of the film is just that. But each event for the most part makes sense and flows with Lynch's direction making up for parts that may drag with a lesser director. Everyoen should give this a shot once.

This is the anal lite worst movie. It's boring as can be. Reading the story in 5 mins on the internet is all you need to know. I don't even remember this movie being in the box office let alone don't understand how it has such a high RT score…. Anyways if you wanna be bored for 1.5 hours be my guest. I didn't even watch it all the way through. It's literally and old man who rides a riding lawn mower a couple hundred miles to see his dying brother. There you watched the movie lmfao

A beautiful movie and easily one of Lynch's best. I feel obliged to push back on the notion that this movie is somehow at odds with his filmography because of the G rating. This is a gentler Lynch to be sure but the movie is still his through and through both narratively and stylistically.

Fabulous, 'Crazy Old Man on a Tractor' flick. More of us need his level of commitment.
