Submarine Reviews

'Submarine' is an artfully made, wonderfully endearing and enjoyable film. Along with being very funny, it genuinely understands and insightfully explores teen anxiety and communication troubles.

Fifteen-year-old Oliver has two goals. Get laid and make sure his parents don't break up. A hidden gem of a movie. I've certainly never heard of it. A coming of age tale with a philisophical bent, my younger self can relate to one of Oliver's goals. ;) Ayoade is great in front or behind the camera. I'm surprised he hasn't been tapped to direct more than two films. Both of his films are idiosyncratic with unique approaches to filmmaking. Recommended.

Submarine is a great film engaging perfectly with the 2010 aesthetic of life in Wales as a teen with the grunge outfits and the overall feel of the film with amazing soundtracks done by Alex turner. the plotline is thick with multiple stories and one story teller being the main character himself , he keeps the films and plotlines separate concisely while expanding on the other peoples personal lives that somewhat intertwine. the tiny details heap so much feel into the film 10/10 my favourite film

My favourite film, a coming of age from the perspective of a really awkward and off-putting boy called Oliver and his first love. Very cinematic and dry but so funny and aesthetically pleasing.

Everything in this film works, from the relatable subjects (everyone wants to lose their virginity before 16), every star in this film works, Paddy Constantine, Craig Roberts, Noah Taylor and Yasmin Page. I think it deserves the moniker, the second best film of 2010, behind FOUR LIONS.

The directorial debut of Richard Ayoade, best known as Maurice from The IT Crowd, Submarine is a coming-of-age story set in Wales, following your average shy, awkward, 4th wall breaking teen trying to navigate adolescent life, surrounded by obstacles and challenges, including a crush at school, his parents ailing marriage and his Mum's old flame moving in across the street. It's a frequently funny and insightful look at a pivotal stage in a person's life. The film works so well because of its relatability. The problems our lead encounters are the kind that most if not all of us have dealt with, and his solutions, while occasionally silly and outlandish, are not beyond the realm of possibility. Criag Roberts deftly plays a character we can all see a bit of ourselves in, and his line delivery is so realistic and genuine that you'll completely forget he's reading from a script. Yasmin Paige is a great love interest, and the film is smart enough to make her her own individual with her own issues and personality quirks, rather than just being an idealised love interest. It strikes a balance of being funny without becoming flippant, and when Oliver has to face the consequences of his actions, or inactions, it's treated with seriousness. It's an incredibly confident debut, a film that Ayoade clearly had a clear vision of and wasn't willing to compromise. As a result, we got a hilarious, meaningful and life-affirming film about the bloom of youth and the trials and tribulations of a phase we all go through, and cope with in our own unique ways.

really gives me vibes of the internal sunshine of the spotless mind movie. The girl with the short hair was reminded me of amelie.

I typically say I have 3 favorite movies, and this is one of them. An eye-holding coming of age story scored by the immaculate Alex Turner (of Arctic Monkeys) and directed by the genius Richard Ayoade. The performances all feel like a warm cup of tea that make you want to take another sip.

Autobiographical teen crush movie fresh with wit and honesty - it's charming start to finish. Funny, poignant. Props to Richard Ayoade for taking the plunge. If you liked: Rushmore

cute, funny, quirky movie, made bad by superior, bigoted, self-congratulatory message to "americans" at the outset. classless and stupid.

Submarine is a soft, indie coming of age story. With a gorgeous, calm soundtrack by Alex Turner. Quite a quirky, enjoyable, British film; awkward and funny. Liked how they used actual Welsh actors as well. I rated it a 7.5 and Reuben gave it a 7.4

Wow. Richard Ayoade and company give us a fairly simple, but powerful movie. Where through a roller coaster of emotions, the viewer learns that happy endings come, but not always through the way one would like.

Strangely fun. The calm soundtrack and the funny acting make Ayoade's work fun and melancholy.

A soft, velvet coming-of-age story like no other. Both protagonists are comfortably awkward, and undeniably relatable. There are no embellishments, no exaggerations, no nonsense when it comes to Oliver and Jordana; quintessentially normal British teenagers, familiar to us all, from their inability to manage emotions and tricky situations, to their confused nature of overthinking. The stunning backdrop adds an element of tranquillity and isolation, heightening the glimmers of beauty that shine through this film, whilst the playfully melancholy soundtrack by Alex Turner pushes forward the indie, youthful tone the so prominent throughout. Overall, Submarine is one of those gems that although simple and straightforward, illuminates and radiates wisdom and awareness of the difficult years of adolescence.
