Surviving Christmas Reviews
A couple funny jokes sprinkled atop a giant bowl of cringe and humorless slop. Avoid.
This is the worst acting performance I've ever seen from Ben Affleck, and that's a lot to say. And considering he is the main character, all the other things in the movie just went downhill. And if you add the fact that they "improvised" much of the script while they were filming....
Ben Affleck is laughably bad in this movie. It is definitely one of his worst performances. He can’t stop grinning for some reason. The premise of this film is fairly absurd, and even if you suspend your disbelief for the sake of the story, almost every character is incredibly annoying and unlikable. I watched this movie at Christmas time, just taking a random chance. Sometimes you just choose the wrong movie to watch and that was this movie. It will be the one and only time I ever watch this film.
Watching James Gandolfini and Christina Applegate glower in this absurd situation is worth several chuckles. There are so, so many worse Christmas movies with less novel premises. Admittedly, the main character's behavior makes no sense even if we assume he's somewhere on the spectrum. Other people's reaction is where the laughs are. The closest comparison to this plot is The Man Who Came to Dinner, with a family forced to play host to an intruder for the holidays or lose a lot of money. It has its moments
It was cheesy but entertaining. I didn’t expect much. Reminds me of Vacation movies.
I don't know, after hate-watching so many terrible holiday movies, for whatever reason, I kind of enjoyed this one. The plot is rather unbelievable, but what holiday movie plot isn't?? Catherine O'Hara is always wonderful, and I'm a sucker for any Ben Affleck flick. If they had a star rating system for only holiday flicks, this would've received 3 1/2 of 'em. Merry Christmas :)
I created an account just to rate this movie. This may be the worst movie ever made. Meaningless plot. Every character is unlikeable. This movie is so bad it will make you angry that it exists.
Well Ben Affleck is in it, so you know it's going to be fairly horrible, but I wasn't prepared to see just how horrible Ben Affleck is in this movie. It's TERRIBLE. Other actors are fine, but Ben Affleck is shockingly horrendous. It's almost worth watching just to see how bad he is. But don't, it would give the impression that people are watching it un-ironically
I'm not sure why so many people disliked this movie. I think it delivers what it promises. It's definitely a film for young adults and teenagers. But I still thought most the jokes were good and it had a clever plot. The cast was great and it made me feel greatful. I say christmas fans should give it a try.
Fun movie to watch! Awesome cast. Pretty funny and relatable moments as well. I know that the “movie critics” appear to hate this movie but that must be based on some innate desire to sound more refined than the average Joe. Surviving Christmas is light hearted and comical while touching on the idea of loneliness during the holidays which afflicts many of us during this time of year. Watch it for yourself and you be the Judge.
I love this movie, it’s hilarious and fun to see these A-list actors in a silly Christmas movie. I will watch it every Christmas 🎄
This movie is one of the best movies ive seen, so funny i loved watching it with my roommates. Must watchhh stupid funnyyy. You are boring af if you dont like it
Just funny & that's that.
It had a great cast with a pretty dumb story and a lot of over acting, but it was still enjoyeable to pass the time.
It’s corny. It’s funny. Not a bad Christmas movie
This movie has become my favorite for Christmas. For someone who deals with loneliness on the holidays this gave it a beautiful prospective.
Very rarely do I pay attention to the opinion of employed critics anymore as I believe they gain more traction for providing negative and supercilious responses to films very much with the intention of being fun and easy watches This movie is just that, whilst the premise of the story is silly, it provides a balanced recipe of the intentionally pesterous Drew who is determined to have fun with his money at the expense of the Valco family purely because he can - and the obstinate Valco’s who are forced to play happy family’s to earn their contractually agreed invoice. The on screen chemistry between O’Hara and Gandolfini is particularly terrific and sells the average “working class parents, making it work for the kids” This is a Christmas film and was not trying to achieve Academy Award status. It is a light, fun and easy festive comedy and it hits the mark
This was a really tough watch - and with a 7% Rotten Tomatoes rating, I'm happy not to be in the minority for once. There is nothing more painful than watching an actor TRY to be funny - and fail. Poor Affleck. At least he was having a good hair day. And being surrounded by more adept comedic performers doesn't help matters, although no one, including my beloved Catherine O'Hara, manages to remain unscathed. The romantic storyline between Affleck and Applegate is appalling and makes me want to re-evaluate my smart aleck Hallmark remarks. A plot line involving a young teenager's porn addiction seems gratuitous and in poor taste. And even though I'm seemingly full of negatives, I didn't HATE it as much as I have some other holiday films. I'll settle for a strong dislike. Although wasting a comic genius like O'Hara should be grounds for cinematic assault charges. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook)
The stupidest premise of all, but at the end, the performances of Gandolfini and O'Hara saves the movie. Entertaining and funny, but Affleck doesn't makes a good job,
