17-year-old Suzume's journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, "I'm looking for a door." What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob.... Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster. The stars. The sunset. The morning sky. Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky--guided by these mysterious doors, Suzume's journey to close doors is about to begin.

Critics Consensus

Suzume sees director Makoto Shinkai falling just a bit short of the bar set by previous outings -- but when the results are this visually thrilling and emotionally impactful, it's hard to find much fault.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting I was so stirred by the conceit of these pending disasters all emanating from gates that developed on sights that were once joyful places where people congregated. Rated: 4/5 May 26, 2023 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader It all makes for a fine adolescent adventure: travel, rebellion, unattainable love, a search, a chase, a deadline, and a little bit of growing up. And happily, the film understands that some problems don’t get resolved without real sacrifice. Rated: 2/5 Apr 27, 2023 Full Review Emma Steen Time Out Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime is another visually stunning crowdpleaser. Rated: 4/5 Apr 25, 2023 Full Review Justin Kim Loud and Clear Reviews I didn’t have a bad time with Suzume. It looks beautiful and its characters aren’t unlikeable, which gives me a baseline investment. But while it’s not a bad time, it’s a rather shallow one. Rated: 3/5 Jan 6, 2025 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League “Suzume” is an intimate story told in a titanic fashion. It’s artistically dazzling and emotionally resonant on many layers. Rated: 4/5 Jul 18, 2024 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite While the overall vibe does feel like a retread of [Makoto Shinkai's] last two films, that doesn’t take away from the evocative emotional weight of its narrative. THE NASHVILLE I Suzume's an incredibly fulfulling and original movie. It's more than anime; it's wildly exciting movie audiences will love. The idea's very original, but not farfetched enough to be unbelievable. The voice casting is also amazing; the two leads have very alluring but admirable personalities so that you're very much hanging on to their every word. If that wasn't enough, the animation is BREATHTAKING. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/25 Full Review Rodney I really enjoyed this movie. It kept me engaged from start to finish, and the English subtitles gave enough time to read them. With the sound and animation, everything felt very realistic. The story made sense too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Judah B What a gorgeous roaming epic of young love, trauma, and finding meaning. The age gap is certainly an ick, but unfortunately, Japanese media generally does not seem to share my disgust. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Gabriel Bourque I don't really care for this movie. It's charming and somewhat good, but forgettable Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Sandra loved it so much! had me in tears!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Jie nice cover empty contents Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
