Suzume Reviews
What a gorgeous roaming epic of young love, trauma, and finding meaning. The age gap is certainly an ick, but unfortunately, Japanese media generally does not seem to share my disgust.
So good I loved that they had to nerf that absolutely hottie by turning him into a chair, the plot is great, the visuals are amazing, the characters and dynamics are great, a number of great twists, I would recommend 👍
I honestly have no idea why anyone has any problem with this beautiful masterpiece it honestly had studio ghibli running for it’s money genuinely I was amazed the animation, story, emotion, comedy and everything in between were amazing while a lot of endings ruin the film this one made it better and had me thinking about it for weeks on end this is a MUST WATCH many people will say I’m glazing it but it had me happy, excited, worried I was hooked from the beginning to the end and every character had deepness and a story behind what you see on the outside now do yourself a favor and go watch this masterpiece
Animation looks great. Storytelling wasn't great. The whole movie just didn't make a lot of sense. The story seems forced. Just couldn't connect with it. It pales in comparisons with 5 cm and Your Name.
I'm not even a big fan of director “Makoto Shinkai”. But I’ve always had the opportunity to follow and enjoy his works, such as “Your Name” and “Weathering with You”. When it was announced that this movie was coming out, I was eagerly looking forward to watching it. This movie has an interesting plot , but there are some points that I think don't make sense. The story of "Suzume" begins with the protagonist "Suzume" meeting the mysterious young man "Sota", who has the task of closing the mysterious “doors” that have appeared across Japan. These doors are paths that bring disaster into the world. The two of them embark on a journey to close these doors and face many mysterious events. Along the way, Suzume learns about her past, pain, and emotional growth. What makes the story engaging is following the relationships of the characters, and the movie incorporates real events from Japan, making it easy for us to imagine. There are parts of the story where the audience can guess what’s going to happen next, and I still think that going on a journey with a strange man lacks strong enough reasons to justify it. However, what makes the movie still addictive is the emotional depth and the characters’ growth. The mood of the movie The script in this movie still carries Makoto Shinkai’s unique style. Even though the plot is simple, like a journey, the scenes are filled with emotion, feelings, and mysteries. The characters' lines are profound, and the overall script covers a variety of emotions, from funny and heartwarming scenes to intense dramatic moments that are well conveyed to the audience. The character that is not very overblown. True to the author’s design style, the characters are not as sharply distinguished as in other animated films. I feel this makes it easier to relate to the characters. From the protagonist’s story, the movie allows us to follow the growth of both Suzume and Sota, and there are mysteries surrounding both of them. There are supporting characters in the story, though they don’t have many scenes, their roles are important for creating emotions and showing the growth of the protagonists. Another key character is the cat named Daijin, which is very well designed and cute, becoming a viral sensation on the internet. The visuals and sound are very good things in this movie. I admit that the plot is very engaging, but the visuals and sound are the highlights of Makoto Shinkai’s direction. For me, it didn’t disappoint at all and was worth the wait. These two aspects are what complete the story, with beautiful visuals, magnificent effects, vibrant colors, and perfect composition. The soundtrack by RADWIMPS stands out and helps set the mood for each scene, especially in scenes related to loss and hope. Scene and costume design The design of the scenes and locations in the story is inspired by real places in Japan, giving it a realistic feel. The costumes of the characters are simple yet effectively convey their identities. This simplicity, paired with real locations in Japan, is a small gimmick that fans of the director can enjoy by recognizing the places. It’s a fun touch for those following this director’s work. A small part that I think is still missing. Since this movie was adapted into an animated film for theaters, there’s a time constraint, so some parts of the story are condensed, and certain points aren’t explored further. In conclusion If you enjoy animations with beautiful visuals, great music, and a heartwarming story, this movie is definitely worth watching. I recommend watching it in theaters or with a good sound system, as it enhances the emotional experience.
From the creator of Your Name(2015/16), this brilliant (but unoriginal) masterpiece mixes The Wizard of Oz(1939, by some scenes), Hailey's on It(2023), Doraemon between other resources with maestry
A beautiful Japanese animated film that blends coming-of-age themes with a road-trip narrative. The animation is stunning, immersing us in a fantastical and spiritual journey set in modern-day Japan. This journey serves as a subjective reflection of what the protagonist is going through emotionally at that stage of her life. At its core, the film explores the theme of opening up and having difficult conversations with loved ones as a means of healing from past trauma and grief. This theme remains central throughout the story, giving depth to the protagonist’s experiences. Structurally, the film presents some minor issues. The plot is set in motion by a sudden romantic connection, where the protagonist seems to fall in love after just meeting another character. While they do get to know each other, the events unfold over just a few days, making their motivations somewhat difficult to fully relate to. This applies to other characters as well, some who join the journey later on without a clearly established reason. The first half of the film can feel a bit repetitive, but a clear midpoint shifts the story in a slightly different direction, keeping things engaging. Ultimately, the film prioritizes symbolic and emotional storytelling over strict narrative logic. It leans into "anime logic" for some plot points, requiring a degree of suspension of disbelief. While these choices might not work for everyone, they feel intentional rather than problematic. Overall, it’s a beautiful, emotionally resonant film that I’d highly recommend, especially for fans of the genre.
This is one of my favorite anime movies ever. Its story is incredible and heartwarming, and the art style and visuals are truly breathtaking.
I really liked this movie. I liked the visuals, the messaging, the story, and the soundtrack. It was really touching at certain points and really gave me something to think about. However, the only reason I’m giving it four stars is due to the plot. I felt like the plot fell a bit flat at times and overall could’ve used a bit more nuance and depth. I also would’ve liked a bit more background information regarding Souta. Such as how his family became “Closers”, his own life background, other than just “I’m a teacher in training”, etc. But other than that it was an enjoyable movie that I would watch again.
Me encantó es una película hermosa tanto visualmente como narrativamente me encantaron los personajes y la recomiendo muchísimo
I just finished watching it! And I have to say I loved it… Different from other teenage girls, I think this story was very original and the animation is great! I just love it.
Fascinating and overwhelming.
I love this movie and the animation is spell-binding.
Mais uma das obras do nosso querido Makoto Shinkai, esse cara é incrivel!! Os filmes dele são insuperáveis, eu fiquei decepcionado Quando ele perdeu o premio de animação do ano, merecia demais nota 1000!!
Whenever I hear that Makoto Shinkai is directing a new film, I get excited. Shinkai creates wonderful stories. Ever since his breakout hit "Your Name.", the one critique that I hear about his work is that all his films feel similar. If by that they mean, his films feature a teenage girl protagonist, magic realism, romance, great radwimps music and absolutely beautiful animation, then yes, his films do have a pattern. And if that is the case, I could still go for a hundred more Shinkai films like this. "Suzume" is about a girl named Suzume, who finds there are a series of doors throughout Japan that must be closed to keep out a great evil. That is as far as I will describe the story, best to figure out the rest by just watching the film. I love how this film handles its world building. There isn't a narrator explaining everything, it does not hold your hand through the proceedings. The way the story unfolds, the audience only knows what the main character, Suzume, knows. Makoto Shinkai has been compared to Miyazaki; both make wonderful anime films. In this film, as opposed to running away from the comparisons, "Suzume" has a lot of loving references to Miyazaki movies. Along with a McDonalds commercial, which is one of Shinkai's trademark. So, this film already has all the things we know about Makoto Shinka. Yes, this has the great animation, music and creativity. But it also has great characters and a unique sense of humor. Typically, a writer has to come up with some reason to thrust our hero into the action. This one, for the most part, Suzume is doing this because it needs to be done and she wants to help. The English voice cast does a terrific job all around, but especially Nichole Sakura in the title role. She hits every emotional beat just right and brings such life into this character. And for the humor, this film had some all-time great jokes. They never interrupted the flow of the story, they were just genuine moments from the characters. Open this door up and give this film a watch, your future self will thank you for it.
I love it. I saw a short on youtube about it and decided to watch it. I definitely don't regret it. Its amazing
I don't really care for this movie. It's charming and somewhat good, but forgettable
Mokoto Shinkai continues to show off his visually delightful and epic animation talents, though now with a story and characters that are a bit too reminiscent of "Twilight".
