The Adults Reviews
Slow, boring, odd and neither funny nor dramatic. Abandoned it after 20 minutes.
The Adults is a wry and compassionate film about sibling bonds and past memories. Nothing much happens and it does wander a bit but I found it interesting and involving. The film is about a brother and his two sisters. Their shared history is conflicted and at times painful. Eric takes a short trip back home and connects with Rachel and Maggie. His relationship with Maggie is OK but it is definitely strained with Rachel. The film gently takes us through the shared relationship. It's sometimes painful and ruminative, sometimes happy and hopeful. Eric also gets distracted whilst he is there by a poker game, with which he gets very obsessed. This a gentle and observant film about the bonds between siblings. Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis are all very good in the lead roles. A small film but an interesting one nonetheless.
Boring and slow... the arguments using little voices are terrible to watch. Not worth the time.
Honestly, I started watching this movie on a plane and regret I wasted 30 minutes trying to get into it. So slow, so boring, such sad lives (but not even sad enough to cry over) I can't imagine it redeemed itself later. I rarely give up on a movie I've spent that much time watching.
This could have been a decent movie. Michael Cera mailed this one in. Couldn't even bother to learn the lines of songs. Tsk tsk
Good-hearted; maybe a but quirky.
This movie didn’t know what it wanted to be and therefore ended up being nothing. You can add all the sentimental music you want but you actually need a script and plot. Other than a couple of sweet moments at the very end, this movie was pretty useless.
"It was okay. The performances were decent. I feel like I've seen this story many times. I think it would have faired much better in the year 2000."
The best thing about the movie by far was a minor hit by Men at Work.
Aimless but not in great way
absolutely terrible, aimless and boring
Made me tear up, as a teen I saw a bit of my brother and I in the relationship the siblings had throughout the movie. It reflected some of my fears of the future, but it reminded me that the bond that some siblings share goes beyond most things. Beautiful movie, the ending was very touching ❤️🩹
This film was a waste of my time. Cera is so annoying and the only likeable character is his younger sister. The constant play acting the trio of siblings does is really anno ying to watch.
Was kind of Dark and interesting
It's great to see siblings on screen. The silly voices can be excruciating, but it makes you desperate for the siblings to be direct and honest with each other. I think we all roleplay the past when we don't know how to connect in the present. The scene where Hannah Gross berates Michael Cera for his calculating approach to family time... ouch.
A beautiful film with a lot of heart and emotion. I'm convinced that the director Dustin Guy Defa has had these experiences in the film because, it was extremely realitistic and I loved that. The comedy is very sutle which I also appreciated as well. Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis really gave an excellent performance and I'm so grateful I got to see this absolute masterpiece. This film really isn't for everyone and from the get go you know it's going to be a rather slow film but, you appreciate every detail put into this film.
It's precisely what the critics claim. A bizarre watch. I made it through the entire thing. But, I was left thinking Cera could have put together a far better movie with the talent of this cast. Instead, he just used up a few hours of my time.
Not sure why I didn't walk out. No real plot, just meandering scenes of damaged siblings with clearly some past trauma or mental issues but no real exploration on that or reasons why other than they lost their Mom and never talked about it. And yet the still don't discuss their mothers death and what it did to their dynamic. So very unsatisfying to not really understand more of their history or what was going on beneath the surface. The long shots of faces with no understanding what was going on was off-putting if not creepy. It came across more like a guy coming home to hang out with his exes than with sisters. Now I have trauma about not getting my Friday night back...
The was no plot. It was just boring
very great movie with a lot of hidden emotions i loved it.
