The Banshees of Inisherin Reviews

Apr 19, 2025

One of my absolute favourite movies of all time. I understand it is t for everyone. You'll either love it or hate it. I think it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen . Even if you hate it you can't deny the quality of the acting. The premise is ridiculous, just enjoy the single scenes.

Quando pensi di aver capito come funziona la storia, The Banshees of Inisherin si trasforma in qualcos'altro

Wondering how this movie could be listed and awarded as Best Movie of The Year

I've seen this movie before, and I love it. To me, this is a masterpiece, a nearly flawless film where very aspect deserves praise. The cinematography is both beautiful and effective, using visual storytelling techniques like blocking and color to enhance the narrative. One might think dialogue isn’t even necessary, but it’s masterfully written, elevating the film’s rhythm and emotional depth. The script is exceptional, exploring its themes with nuance through fully developed characters, each brought to life by incredible performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. The tone is handled with precision, balancing somber drama with moments of humor; classic Martin McDonagh. His unique creative vision ties everything together seamlessly, demonstrating his skill as both a writer and director. Other standout elements include the impeccable production design, which immerses us in the setting and makes us want to be a part of it despite the story’s inherent gloom. Sound and editing are also top-notch, enhancing the emotions of each scene with precision. Some may find the pacing slow, but to me, it’s just right. The music, while not particularly memorable, still serves the narrative well, both the diegetic traditional Irish tunes and the non-diegetic tense undertones. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this film. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Film about friendship, loneliness, stubbornness of men with a beautiful glimpse of Ireland. Tragic story with comedic interactions. Terrific acting all around.

The Irish civil war is the backdrop. The Irish use of the English language gives a beautiful dimension. All the acting is astoundingly good. The music is simple but haunting. The cinematography is heart breaking. When the film had finished I say for about half an hour just thinking about it. I watched it again straight after and a couple of times since. Mind shaping.

Bored. Didnt connect throughout. Overrated.

The conflict between love and hate snakes through this masterpiece until it haunts the soul for weeks afterwards. Isolated and lonesome on an island, human frailties are exposed and the need of companionship (or not) reveal the depths of cruelty we are capable of. Stupendous scenery emphasise that the elements differ not a jot from ourselves. Oscars should've been thrown at this film.

Quite a quirky film, and an interesting message. lots of irish words though.

Very dark, deals with the human condition, loneliness, hope, relationships, death. No it doesn't sound like a barrel of laughs and if you'd rather watch something light, fluffy and entertaining that will wash over you, then choose something else. However, I loved it and the performances of the the two central characters are superb, as is the rest of the cast.

Half way through I would have given this five stars as a totally brilliant (if zany) comedy set in a rural Irish island in some pre-industrial time but then the last half hour - unbearably sad

This is everything I love about film. Made me reflect on my friendships while being completely entertained.

A grim confection with no reward aside from great acting and beautiful photography. After watching I felt as desolate as the dry stone fields of Inisherin.

The first half is believable with the characters refusing to let by-gones be bygones, but then the plot takes off into the realm of fantasy and despite briliant acting, remains unconvincing, Not the Ireland I remember or would want to remember ! Depressing film overall.

I hated it. From the moment that the sister hung out her washing all wrong (she nearly folded each garment in half and put 2 pegs to each item) I knew that people who couldn't be bothered to check how you hang out washing with a person who actually had experience of this activity would not be conscientious about the things that I think are important. Why did Colm get so worked up that he took the drastic action that he did? Was it just meant to be metaphorical?

With a story that feels absurd yet undeniably dramatic, and characters who are both obsessively extreme and tinged with bittersweet emotions, The Banshees of Inisherin weaves a thought-provoking fable that lingers between the surreal and the painfully real.

An interesting dark dramedy character study about male loneliness, human connection, and personal legacies. The dark dry humor blends in well with the depressing mean-spirited undertone of the movie with some genuine moments of uplifting relief with the cute farmyard animals. Sometimes it can be a bit too meanspirited and dreary for its own good, but nonetheless it’s still a very solid character study about our relationships with other people/creatures, how we wish to spend our time, and the petty escalating pissing contests that men just can’t help themselves. Not to mention the acting from the main leads is terrific and the rural Irish setting is beautifully captured onscreen.

The Banshees of Inisherin This is a masterpiece and a masterclass. The laughs come with a weight, giving us something to hold onto as we feel the depth and shed the tears. Visually stunning as well. I loved it.
