The Chambermaid Reviews

Sep 17, 2020

I really loved this film about a working class woman who works as a maid in a fancy hotel in Mexico City. Nothing fancy, just a poignant glimpse in to a world that millions of ordinary people experience every day of their lives. The relationships are normal, no Hollywood everybody screws everyone else here. It's a real gem I reckon.

Powerful, even though it is ultimately sad. Great lead performance.

Eve is working as a chambermaid for one of Mexico City's most luxurious hotels. She is a hardworking and shy, young lady that treat herself little joy - it's much more important to keep her job. She pay little interest in her anoying co-workers as they keep telling her that she can buy stupid things from them for "special" prices. We meet a few occational weird guests, but mostly this is plain forward and doesn't bring the most exciting or special scenes. It's constructed in a way that this is not very needed, this is super authentic, slightly fascinating, a bit monotonous with all the routines but it manage to stay interesting, thanks to a great lead. It reminds me of Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma", just shorter and a bit less dramatic. A solid film that sadly slightly lost my interest the last 10 minutes or so. Still, a more than decent effort. 7.5 out of 10 red dresses.

I wanted to like this movie more. It has a lot going for it, but simply put, not a whole heck of a lot happens plot-wise or in character development, so it borders on boring (and I enjoy slow movies!).

Quietly observational of a world that is unseen.

Worst movie ever!!! Slow, with no point nor message... If you want to loose 2 hours of your life, this is the right movie.

A Camareira (2018) 3,5 ⭐️ #MovieReview A vida de uma camareira jovem com um filho que mal vê por morar longe; seus sonhos, rotina e vida. Interessante cenário de vida.

You're going to know in the first 10 minutes whether to stick with 'The Chambermaid'. Go with your instincts. There isn't much of a script, but it a realistic slice of life of people we don't think much about. This Mexican film intrigued me and kept my attention. It doesn't overstay it's welcome and it's cerebral. It's not for everyone and frankly I'm kinda surprised I liked it. It's different and fresh and for that reason you should give it a shot. It's a movie for people who like movies. Sometimes the story can be more powerful than the words on a page. This is one of those rare times. Final Score: 6.8/10

What a pile of crap...

Great portrait of a very common working people in Mexico. Great actors performance, a tribute to the anonymous people behind the jobs, simple story but a little bit slow. This is a clever way to produce movies in a country that never pay for autor/cultural movies but many viewers complain for better stories, paradoxical request.

this was one of the most boring movies I ever saw

It was Bad even if it had been a student film. The dialogue, the little there was, was poorly written. The main character acted and spoke in slow motion. I stayed for a discussion afterwards and the film was supposed to be great "because one kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did". WTF? If that makes a great film, I'm going to be a filmmaker. In the climax, the character finally makes a decision, but it is one that will make her life even worse. She collects filthy used sugar packets from the trash and fills them with popcorn. Why? We never know. If she is taking them to her kid, it is gross. I found myself hoping for a tragic end just so the character and the audience could be put out of our misery and we could go home. I would have left, but I came with friends. It's 2 1/2 hours of my life that I can never get back.

Sadly this movie didn't cut it for me and perhaps the editor could've cut more from the realistic view of The Chambermaid. If you enjoy the solitude of delving into a character a chambermaid isn't going to cut it for you! Perhaps Roma may have inspired the director for this movie but honestly it was a bore!

An emotional, human and necessary film among Mexican society, which is so classist and lacking of empathy towards the people who make life easier for the most favored.

Una joya del cine mexicano. La sencillez con que está contada contrasta con su honesta profundidad, que me ha dejado reflexivo por largo rato. Este es el cine mexicano que necesitamos, aunque también, tristemente, el que el grueso del público ignorará.

First, the result will be a quiet movie. It shows the metaphor of a quiet life, but sometimes tedious, this is the life of a maid who works in a hotel almost all day. It's simple, it almost never becomes boring, but it has a very slow ending and never reaches a really emotional point. It just works.
