A monumental senseless circus that only its creator comprehends, Alejandro Jodorowsky has never done cinema for anyone else but himself. [Full review in Spanish]

'Dance of Reality' has its moments of pure Jodorowsky. It will be up to each viewer to decide if that sentence is praise or pejorative.

In this dream we called life, Jodorowsky is dreaming us, us playing part as audience. Who's dreaming Jodorowsky the filmmaker? Cinephiles of course. The Dance of Reality is his much softer, lyrical contemplation of life.

Taken on its own merits, it is a thunderously weird and wonderful movie, filled with scenes and images that won't leave you anytime soon.

The Dance of Reality may suffer from some indulgences, but one can't really blame Jodorowsky for indulging after such a long absence.

... an unexpected and appealing comeback.

A mixed bag, albeit an intensely colorful and at times wildly inventive one.

The Dance of Reality is a wild ride and unlikely to bring Jodorowsky to the mainstream, although it is more disciplined than any of his previous films. But it is rich, warm and wonderful, and certainly a fine entry point into his oeuvre. Do see this.

There's no one quite like Alejandro Jodorowsky.

This is the work of someone coming to terms with their past, transmuting the traumas of childhood into the building blocks of adult awareness.

It won't be to all tastes (graphic nudity, full-frontal urination) and is more hallucinatory memory book than straight autobiography, but what a journey it is.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 20, 2015
At first the film seems overly stagey, and those with little time for circus acts may find it irritating, but when Jodorowsky hits his surreal stride.

You may not know what to think of it, but you'll be glad that it exists.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 20, 2015
The Dance of Reality is a surprisingly moving, emotionally satisfying experience, which twirls you round in a warm, confident embrace, making sure to toss in plenty of its director's signature madcap moves.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 17, 2015
It had a few El Topo moments I could dig, but mostly tested my patience in dealing with Jodorowsky's at times tiresome self-indulgent art.

It is absolutely crazy -- but it's the good kind of crazy.

This probably isn't an ideal starting point for a Jodorowsky novice, but fans of the Fellini brand of self-referential biography cinema may find it appealing.

The filmmaker makes peace with his difficult youth by accepting that every life is filled with both darkness and light.

The crisp digital has nothing on the bold primary colors of his best work -- but the shape-shifting narrative has a lazy Sunday movie watching charm.
