The Dead Don't Die Reviews

It is smart enough to be different that previous zombie horror-comedies like Zombieland and Shaun Of The Dead and has that unique Jamusch stamp on it which will mean it is a film that will be adored by those who love his unique style of filmmaking.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 29, 2024

…a whimsical, evasive work from a great director off-form, designed to be annoyingly problematic and not for the horror comedy crowd, despite some gore and a few smart moments…

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 1, 2024

Via this slowness, conversations start to go in circles, scenes feel repetitious, and emotions one would likely feel should the Earth’s polarity reverse or corpses resurrect feel somewhat restrained to the point of indifference.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 14, 2024

Unfortunately, I would not recommend this film but will also add the caveat that if you do decide to catch it and you are a fan of the typical zombie film genre, be sure to set aside your expectations before you dive in.

| Original Score: D | May 2, 2024

Jim Jarmusch's zombie comedy The Dead Don't Die is that film you grow to love and you don't know why.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 30, 2023

Driver constantly tells the other characters that “This is going to end badly”... and sadly Driver is correct because The Dead Don’t Die shuffles towards a narratively daring but ultimately unsatisfactory ending.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 10, 2022

There are several inside jokes and some pasted on commentary about us being the zombies clutching to our materialism and technology. But it has no bite whatsoever. So we’re left with the cast who are enough to save the film but just barely.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 20, 2022

Jim Jarmusch is a genuinely original filmmaker and his experimentation with genre filmmaking adds fresh ideas to expected ones, and gives the film lover moments of pure joy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 12, 2022

Part genre experiment, part Jarmusch's angry statement about the world today, The Dead Dont Die uses the broad strokes of comedy and zombie horror to make sociopolitical observations.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Mar 2, 2022

Episode 40: The Dead Don't Die / Birds of Passage / All That Jazz

| Original Score: 50/100 | Oct 4, 2021

It's incredibly funny... They aren't saying anything new but the way they're saying it is hilarious.

| Sep 29, 2021

The vibe is just so pleasantly off-kilter -- something about the humor so dry it's deserted smacking up against the wet slap of cartoon gore and severed heads straight on hit my sweetest of spaces

| Jul 14, 2021

Jim Jarmusch's celeb-heavy zombie comedy promised much - but star wattage and style alone does not a good movie make.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 14, 2021

The Dead Don't Die is only for a very specific type of filmgoer, and even those with a predilection toward liking Jarmusch's films may find their patience tested by its lack of entertainment value.

Sincere ecological anxiety goes hand in hand with a vague but definite misanthropy, as though the population had any control over or was to blame for the activities of the vast corporate interests devastating the planet.

| Feb 10, 2021

There will be other zombie movies after this one, but there don't need to be.

| Feb 8, 2021

It's been a long time since someone crafted such a boring zombie movie.

| Original Score: 2/10 | Dec 7, 2020

It plays less to hardcore horror masticators, and more to those of us experiencing growing zombie ennui in the wake of the subgenre's re-explosion roughly a decade ago.

| Nov 9, 2020

Jarmusch has mastered the art of casting an ensemble that truly gets his unique artistic voice.

| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 5, 2020

Jarmusch, however, seems caught between his own, unique style and the needs of the zombie movie, which demands a certain amount of macabre bloodshed and action.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 16, 2020
