The Devil Has a Name Reviews
Olmos's direction of his performers is strong and the work of cinematographer Reynaldo Villalobos makes the film's Bakersfield locations look spectacular.

When any combination of Strathairn, Olmos and Sheen share the screen, it's easy to see how The Devil Has a Name would've worked without its soapy, over-the-top quirks - but that's not the movie that Olmos has made, sadly.

The Devil Has a Name is an imperfect attempt at a satirical dramedy.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 19, 2020
The whole movie starts to feel like a tornado touched down in the editing room.

This isn't a bad film and it's not a great one... Sort of middle-tier.
| Oct 19, 2020
Workmanlike directing from Olmos, and well-acted overall... A compelling enough piece of work.

This whistleblower drama, with its odd touches of comedy and noir, certainly has its heart in the right place, but the story is frustratingly, awkwardly told and it ultimately amounts to very little.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 19, 2020
[The Devil Has a Name] is not your average legal thriller... with an eclectic mix of actors playing the heroes and villains, most of them peculiar in some way.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 19, 2020
... takes some melodramatic turns that strain credibility and obscure the urgency of the film's social activism.
| Oct 19, 2020
[It] has its moment but lacks the expected bite.
| Oct 19, 2020
An angry movie that's angry about the right things. But it's so angry that it gets a little crazy about it.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 16, 2020
Olmos is therefore the "cool" teacher presenting serious subject matter in a colorful way. And to that end he succeeds.
| Original Score: B- | Oct 16, 2020
The aspirations are lofty but the result disappointing in Edward James Olmos' humorously melodramatic tale.
| Original Score: C+ | Oct 16, 2020
It doesn't coalesce into any sort of entertaining or engaging effort, not helped by some truly sub-par editing and overall storytelling flow. (Full Content Review for Parents - Violence, Profanity, Nudity, etc. - also Available)

Caught somewhere between a dark satire and a serious critique, The Devil Has a Name is a tonally confused examination of corporate malfeasance.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 16, 2020
A disjointed and clumsy drama.
| Original Score: D+ | Oct 16, 2020
An erratic real-life dramedy that's too all over the place in terms of tone.

"The Devil Has a Name" means to deliver an inspirational lesson about the depravity of big industry and the power of the little guy. But it's mostly a muddle.
| Oct 15, 2020
Shoots for a quirky take on legal and planetary horror when the subject matter deserves a more sobering approach.
| Original Score: C | Oct 15, 2020
A dusty soap opera set in the California desert where evil oilmen fight a crusty farmer, The Devil Has a Name is a real head-scratcher.
