The Dinner Reviews
Compressing layers of familial discontent and rancor thinly-masked by the repulsive worst of white privilege, the tightly-wound urgency and shattering purpose of this titular meeting reveals itself over the film’s two hours.

Gifted with a terrific ensemble cast all at the top of their game here.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 6, 2020
The resulting film and the characters are all patchwork versions of real life and people. Nothing about this film feels genuine.

A master class in acting. A master class in filmmaking. Oren Moverman's The Dinner is a sumptuous feast for the psyche and the senses.

Moverman's dinner is certainly barbed, and often venomous, but in spending two solid hours with such unlikeable company is an ordeal in itself, even one as handsomely crafted and executed as this.

An imperfect but fascinating work, with a stellar cast that offers a disturbing and psychologically complex reflection about social class and family. [Full Review in Spanish]

The director seems to lose the reins of the film and lets his work become an abhorrent ode to excess, both in form and in content. [Full Review in Spanish]

Despite fine performance from its gifted cast and moments of riveting drama and suspense, THE DINNER is a mixed cinematic experience... it will not appeal to every taste.

While The Dinner occasionally serves up too many undercooked ingredients, there's a lot of genius to examine in what filmmaker Oren Moverman prepares.

I challenge you to see this film and not still be thinking, days late...

The adaptation of Hermann Koch's brilliant biting satire, The Dinner, was a huge disappointment to me.

This incredibly disturbing and often frustrating film can at times come across as pretentious, obnoxious, and distressing: but that's the point.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 20, 2018
The Dinner serves up an interesting main course, but it seems like the filmmakers want you to fill up on bread first.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Oct 31, 2018
There's no shortage of ripped-from-the-headlines plot points: mental illnesses, millennial evil, political gerrymandering, failing education systems and snooty foodie culture all collide in what becomes a uniquely awful dramatic hodgepodge.

Themes of social inequality that whet our appetite eventually give way to unfulfilling contrivances.
| Mar 7, 2018
This is a sad, talky, slow-paced movie that seems to drag on longer than its two hour running time. On top of that there is an ambiguous ending, which makes it seem even less worthwhile to sit through.

Some films you watch, thinking, "This is seriously never going to end." The Dinner is more like, "this is seriously never going to begin."

The Dinner manages to work thanks to the delivery of his actors... [Full review in Spanish]

... a well-intentioned attempt at a thriller, but without a moral dilemma. [Full review in Spanish]
