Every moment is purely enjoyable.

It does make for a fun movie night, as well as making me interested in seeing what Strauss-Schulson does next.

Deconstructs its chosen genre without the cynicism that could render an exercise such as this into simple, unengaging snark, and proves that it’s okay for the filmmakers to like their victims, right down to the final ones.

The Final Girls is a hidden gem that fits delightfully well into the subgenre of horror-comedy. It features witty dialogue, entertaining gags, and an underlying sense of emotional reverence.

A surprisingly funny and sharp-witted caricature of mass-produced horror, The Final Girls is the product of cult film iconography and our culture’s obsession with the ironically good.

The Final Girls is certainly too abstract for general audiences, but horror fans will get a kick out of its post-modern perspective.
| Original Score: 3/4 | May 12, 2022
The film does a great job of capturing all the aspects of old slasher films in a way that highlights the hilarity of it all while respecting the genre.

It's kind of like a sappy, slasher, comedy. If you like all of those things you'll be fine.
| Original Score: 6/10 | May 12, 2021
A delightful '80s slasher parody with some emotional beats that hit harder than you'd expect.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 30, 2020
Through all of this, through the faux slasher, the winks at 80s horror fans, the knowing nudges, the film manages to give off a true 80s cinema vibe through the costumes, décor, and language which were all carefully selected.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Apr 19, 2020
...it's an inoffensive way to spend an hour and a half, but this slavish dedication to playing around with convention ruins the film's potential as a sharp critique of gender roles in Hollywood, not just horror.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 17, 2019
It's disappointing to watch it coast along on its own concept rather than try, well, anything remotely interesting or subversive.
| Original Score: 5/10 | May 24, 2019
The Final Girls is an entertaining bit of spoof comedy that has its own strengths and more emotion than the average horror film.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 10, 2019
The Final Girls has blood on its blade, a twinkle in its eye and an '80s pop song in its heart. It is absolutely worth your while.
| Original Score: B+ | Dec 7, 2018
Combining the meta-horror of Scream and the jumping-through-the-screen plot of Pleasantville, The Final Girls offers an inventive and playful send-up of 1980s slashers.
| Dec 7, 2018
As edgy as the humor is, the film never feels truly dangerous, though the combined efforts of Strauss-Schulson, Fortin and Miller to work within certain parameters actually appears to have led to more creative solutions rather than dull their blades.

There was an interesting story, it made fun of itself, it honored the classics, can be touching at times, and I don't think I stopped laughing the entire time.
| Original Score: 9/10 | Nov 2, 2018
It's charming, touching, and mostly successful.

There are some logic holes and unexplained paradoxes, but ultimately, The Final Girls is a cleverly-written, entertaining flick with a dynamic cast.
| Jun 13, 2018
The downfall of The Final Girls is that it pretty much becomes the tired thing it makes fun of. And it doesn't do much for thrills.
