The Forgiven Reviews
Terrible. Slow. Pointless. Do not waste your time.
It is good to see movies without the too popular CGI overkill, and too much noise and background music but the patience to give the actors room to act. Although the story does not develop at a great speed it does not get boring and the movie does not get lost in too many details. Overall there is a slight suspension of how everything is going to turn out and the script does not give a clue if it will be in a good or bad way. Great performance by Ralph Fiennes.
Well acted with a few good scenes but on the whole its culture clash falls back on obvious observations and predictable narrative beats.
I found this a really thought-provoking watch. Great performances.
I had the opportunity of watching this in theaters in 2021 and I would like to say it was one of the best movies of that year. The film did a great job of making you hate the main characters in the beginning but as the story unfolded and our main character took on this journey you can see their development on the screen as they change around them and how their actions affected them in the long run. With themes of Wealth, adulterous acts, murder, and self-redemption this 2-hour film will leave you feeling full! If you haven't gotten a chance to see this film then I highly recommend you do so.
Well, with Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain in the leading roles one would expect an outstanding movie, but soon one realizes that it is mainly a lot of bullshit chit-chat to fill up movie time around the main story. It's partly intriguing, but soon you will find yourself skipping more and more scenes to only watch what one could consider important parts. The very end is quite predictable as it is idiotic as well. 2/10 points.
really interesting movie, much more than I expected. Great performances!
Bit disjointed, solidly acted
Pretty bad, wasted two hours on this one (no actually I bailed with about 15 minutes left) Pretentious, self-righteous drivel about so-called western "privilege", moralizing in the worst way and acting that was cringe-worthy. I can't forgive this one, sorry.
3.0 stars; In theme (but not in quality), this movie reminds me of "The Ugly American". Except, it should be called 'The Ugly Non-Arabian'. For me, the only saviors of this movie are the Sahara landscape and an acceptable level of acting. Overall, the movie was too long and too boring... Wallowing in its decadence.
I cannot believe I just wasted over two hours of my time watching this drivel. Horrible
Very superficial. You already know that either nothing will happen or you can guess what will happen.
This is an incredibly gripping theatrical experience. The cinematography is gorgeous~the Moroccan desert is both inviting and terrifying in this film. The characters intrigue you immediately and you feel like a voyeur in their sordid affairs. This is a must see!
Unwatchable. The writing is so heavy handed that I couldn't cross the 20 minute mark.
I'm kind of torn with this one. The story itself is a good one and Ralf Fiennes is remarkable as the lead character and kept me watching until the end. He is truly a great actor. The other characters (party guests and hosts) aren't likable in any way and actually almost ruin what could have been an amazing movie. Lots of lessons to be learned in this movie, I just wished it had been done better.
I enjoyed this film completely, gave it 5, watched it twice. It's a real story about real people with a real pointed truth about facing oneself. Highly tense for the guy who ran over the Moroccan kid on the way to the extravagant party in the Moroccan desert, but releases with lot's of high rolling debauchery along the way with some very cute girls and good looking guys... all very sexy. I will not give any actor credit by name, because to do so would be to leave out someone - EVERY one on this set was so perfectly cast, right down to the "extras" who didn't have even a line... a speaking line that is... so my criteria of five stars is based on everything I just said, plus I love Morocco!
The Forgiven – Or Are They? It's difficult to know what writer/director (John Michael McDonough) was trying to convey with this production. It's about a group of highly unlikeable (in fact totally despicable) privileged whites, gathering together for a grossly decadent ‘party' in a most unlikely place...an isolated semi-palace in the middle of the Moroccan desert. With scant knowledge about the hosts or their guests, we are simply expected to put up with their all too obviously unsubtle vulgar language and generally vile behavior, as they settle into a weekend of grotty debauchery. Drugs, booze, and sex are all part of the sleaze on offer while being attended to by local Moroccan servants -- all who seem to view their employers and guests as worthless rubbish-- which the filmmakers go out of their way to demonstrate. The activities of these privileged whites are served up as gross sensationalism that's bent toward manipulating our view of them as worthless - while all the Muslim servants are presented as angelic – that alone is conjuring up a theme of deliberate racial hatred for little reason other than the sake of it. Is this the sole point of this movie; is there nothing of any real purpose here? At one point a local teenager is killed in a somewhat careless accident, this produces the film's best segment. The father of the boy (played with intensity by Ismael Kanater) requests the perpetrator to go with him while he buries his son, causing much anxiety, but the outcome of this can only be viewed as somewhat peculiar in the extreme. This could have been a modern classic with a more rounded and balanced script. The visual quality is evident and the cast clearly hand-picked, there's an effective atmospheric music score courtesy of Lorne Balfe but how much of Lawrence Osborne's novel remains within the screenplay (seems to have serious omissions) If the object of this project was to generate hatred for whites, it's done its dirty job but will this help any of the worlds social relationships heal? I doubt it very much. Best Quote: from a Moroccan servant after witnessing a blatant act of adultery by a female guest; "A woman with no discretion is like a gold ring through a pigs snout" (no, not Moroccan wisdom, as this pic would have you believe but Proverbs 11:22.
Great actors and solid production behind a fairly simple story that forces a viewer to focus on some of the baseline awfulness of modern times. I kind of wanted to turn away, but couldn't.
