The German Doctor Reviews

...gruesome nature is drawn out at a gradual, subtle pace and the result is more glacial thriller than shield-your-eyes horror...

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jun 16, 2021

Overall this film is really solid and good. It's worth seeing especially if you're looking for something to see that isn't all loud, CGI-heavy, and full of cartoon characters. The German Doctor is really good, just not great.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 11, 2020

A simple and straightforward tale that manages to build a sinister simmer.

| Aug 30, 2019

There's some interesting substance beneath the narrative, but when things in Wakolda do get fraught, you can't help but feel that they're never quite as tense, nor as engrossing, as they perhaps could have been.

Eeeesh. From the moment you see Àlex Brendemühl appear on film as German SS Officer Josef Mengele in The German Doctor, you get the wigs.

Though it lacks the suspense of Marathon Man and The Boys From Brazil, it is still an unsettling made-up concept which could so easily be true.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 18, 2017

A thriller with a historical basis, 'The German Doctor' is a somewhat fictionalized glimpse at a ghastly real-life villain.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 14, 2014

The picture is beautifully shot and the serenity of the Argentine mountain landscape works as an effective contradiction to the deranged, demented narrative at hand.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 29, 2014

Lucia Puenzo's queasy thriller builds up into a quietly effective monster movie.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 18, 2014

It is the dichotomy of the beauty of the setting with Mengele's monstrous deeds that make "The German Doctor" so unnerving.

| Aug 17, 2014

What the movie lacks in chills and thrills is made up for by the methodical unraveling of the truth.

| Aug 17, 2014

Puenzo's initial premise is more promising, though, than her sensational tone.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 15, 2014

[lex Brendemhl's] Mengele is a departure from the mustache-twirling villains of Marathon Man and The Boys from Brazil.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Aug 15, 2014

Quietly unnerving.

| Aug 14, 2014

As he makes drawings of his "perfect specimen," chill pervades and the heart stills. It's an intriguing balancing act.

| Aug 13, 2014

Wakolda lies somewhere between a suspense thriller and a delicately atmospheric art film, but is properly effective as neither ...

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 10, 2014

Puenzo's restraint, though commendable, rather mutes the dramatic impact.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 8, 2014

There's a wonderful sense of dread built up

| Aug 8, 2014

The tone is very different from that of Boys from Brazil-style thrillers. This is a stately art-house drama, well shot in wintry landscapes, which plays like a coming-of-age story.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 8, 2014

[An] atmospheric thriller.
