The Golem Reviews

The re-imagined golem is a intriguing twist that reflects the film's ambitious and intelligent themes.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 27, 2024

The Golem is a gorgeous movie that pays respect to it's roots while also updating the legend, quite terrifyingly, to be relevant with the times. It's a feminist historical set piece that is sure to fcatch your eye, a home run of a debut film.

Unfortunately, the first part lingers on too long and ends up testing the viewer's patience and care for the characters before the creature shows up and things take a turn for the more interesting.

Despite having violence almost forced into its narrative, The Golem is a reflection on maternity. [Full Review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 5/10 | Dec 3, 2019

Too intellectual for horror film lovers and too extreme for those looking for art cinema, The Golem ends up being - in several senses - halfway. [Full review in Spanish]

Despite its precarious tension, one never feels imminent danger. [Full Review in Spanish]

Hanna's growing maternal instincts... feel realistic and [Hani] Furstenberg performs her role in a convincing way. Even the relationship between creator and monster is unexpectedly nuanced. [Full Review in Spanish]

An effective and different way to tell a horror story. [Full Review in Spanish]

It has a deliberate pacing that struggles a tiny bit in the second half, but ratchets up the tension as it careens to its denouement.

Richly serves up a parable on Jewish folklore worth savoring.

| Original Score: B+ | Apr 3, 2019

If paced more efficiently, this could have definitely satisfied a broader audience, but instead, we are left with lackluster horror mixed with a decent drama.

Suspenseful and supernatural, it's a terror tale of revenge and redemption...heralding a new genre: Jewish Horror.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Mar 4, 2019

The Golem is creepy, as the cinematography is awash with atmosphere and the use of such a creature is interesting.

Cheers to The Paz Brothers, and writer Ariel Cohen, for a feminist take on the traditional tale!

| Original Score: 8/10 | Feb 10, 2019

The Golem is a promising first effort from Dread and makes me interested in what the Paz brothers may do next.

It captures an era in which Jews - as they have throughout history - are persecuted for simply existing and because they make easy scapegoats.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 6, 2019

The English-language Israeli production may not wow stateside genre fans, but its approach to the source material is emotionally and intellectually sincere, enacted seriously, if not always engrossingly, by cast and crew.

| Feb 1, 2019

A well-crafted and idiosyncratic supernatural thriller, the film plays like a mix of "Frankenstein," "The Witch," and some of the Coen brothers' more explicitly Jewish movies.

The Golem delivers a unique story rooted in Jewish tradition that is both beautiful and disturbing.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Jan 31, 2019

[I]t is filled with inventive and evocative moments, particularly those grounded in the truly scary aspects of Jewish history.
