The Gospel According to André Reviews
André Leon Talley is an ideal figure for a documentary: smart, eloquent, widely accomplished, and undeniably charismatic.

The most interesting aspect of this slightly over-long documentary has Talley and numerous old friends recall him growing up in the segregated South before embarking on a most unlikely career in New York. Well worth checking out.

Gospel According to André is a story of how strong people can overcome great odds. And in a time of great division and racial tension in America, I think it is a vital story to be told.

Novack is aware of the imagined incongruity of Talley in these places and outright rejects it, making The Gospel According to Andre not only a portrait of its subject but a challenge to our assumptions ...

Expressive, often joyful, endlessly interesting, informative, and occasionally emotional. There have been a great number of docs in the last few years about the fashion world, but few have the expansive reach and complex history of this one.

There really isn't much to decry about the craft or structure of this film. It's very entertaining and engaging for an audience.

...Talley is a thoughtful and forthcoming interview subject, resulting in a documentary that will interest even people who generally buy their clothes at Old Navy.

A thoroughly entertaining and moving look at the man and his world - both offer glamour, style, gossip, and fame, with a back story of hard graft and struggle. We never really get to the heart of the man though. Watch while wearing your "for best".

If Talley is now considered an institution within the fashion industry we can see that he didn't achieve this status merely by camping it up at parties.

This gospel may be joyous and uplifting, but it could have used more depth and soul.

You don't have to be a habitué of the fashion scene to enjoy this entertaining documentary about the iconic André Leon Talley, the man behind the myth.

From his own gospel, André Leon Talley is too savvy and intelligent to create such a documentary. Here he proves he has substance behind the style.

Too often [Talley] is unwilling to let his fabulous, flamboyant guard down. Disappointing.

I'm a sucker for this sort of film.

Pleasantly fills a 90-minute gap, but probably one for fashion nuts only.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 28, 2018
Talley strikes you as a man of sincerity and depth behind all the air-kissing and lamé.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 28, 2018
Indeed, the film is alive with unintentional comedy...Which helpfully distracts from the deadening effect of the surrounding film.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 28, 2018
What gives the film its more lasting poignancy is Talley's discussion of growing up in an African-American community in North Carolina.

Novack follows Talley's lead, but at a polite distance.

It's a disappointing result for a man as incredible as André Leon Talley.
