The Harvest Reviews
This film has some great plot twists and a surprise ending and was overall very well done.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jun 22, 2019
The Harvest is more tense and disturbing than out and out scary, but it's done well enough for us to take it seriously and reflect on the fact that there is nothing more deadly than a human being who is sure that worthy ends justify any means.
| Original Score: B | Dec 19, 2018
The Harvest is a chilling domestic horror with no frills, just a small town terror that dissects the coldness of human relationships.

Morton's performance as the possessive mother is at a level beyond the ordinary. She is haunting and all-encompassing as a mother who is doing everything not to just protect her son, but to maintain complete control over her family.

A slow-burn that stubbornly follows its own path, it is an impressively mature and weighty return to cinema for John McNaughton.

I'm not sure stronger hands could prevent this script from going as far into melodrama as it does.

It's worth a look, though, just don't expect big scares or a particularly new plot.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 2, 2016
It's not perfect, but The Harvest earns a few points for ambition.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 31, 2015
There's a bit of a David Cronenberg vibe to the proceedings - like him, McNaughton is often lauded as a "master of horror" even as both seem more interested in chilly human relationships than buckets of gore.

eschews cheap scares and "boo" moments in favor of constant psychological pressure
| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 23, 2015
At its creepiest, "The Harvest" plays like something ripped from the section of a community newspaper devoted to all things rural and weird.
| Apr 23, 2015
Ultimately, peppered with unresolved metaphors, The Harvest is a thriller without tension, a horror that doesn't scare.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Apr 16, 2015
'Secret Garden' meets 'Misery,' anyone? McNaughton's first feature in too long has much to recommend it, including a deceptively bucolic setting and a shriek-worthy performance by Morton. 'No wire hangers, EVER!'
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 12, 2015
The primary horror in 'The Harvest' comes from watching the superlative talents of Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton wasted on such secondary swill.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Apr 10, 2015
A smart and strong genre work that makes up for a relative lack of gore and viscera with plenty of tension and suspense and a number of impressive performances.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Apr 10, 2015
The Harvest is simply a devilishly fun thriller.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 9, 2015
The Harvest is a thriller that's plagued by tonal miscues, weak leading performances, and a complete lack of tension despite the film's dark, seedy nature.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Apr 9, 2015
There may be little to give you the collywobbles, but there's quite a lot to enjoy, with Ms. Morton heading the list.

Nothing wrong with a little gore as long as the result is a few goosebumps. This one is no scarier than running out of ink in the middle of a midterm exam.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Apr 8, 2015
Director John McNaughton, once an agile orchestrator of seemingly incompatible tones, has retained his talent for teasing insinuation.
