The Haunting Reviews

Apr 21, 2025

I have a lot of love towards this film due to the nostalgia factor it has for me. I will admit it’s not good, but I can’t hate it.

Could have been so much better. More of a Ghostbusters vibe than anything scary.

A nonsensical piece of garbage that combines elements of the classic "The Haunting" (1963) and the almost as good "The Haunting of Hell House" (1974. This mess fails both films and is just a colossal waste of time. Avoid it if you can.

The original was better it was just okay

I wasn't sure whether this was sarcastic or not. It's the most un-scary, boring pile of nonsense i have ever watched.

After watching this movie I understand why the Wayans brothers based scary movie 2 on this. This movie was so dumb.

Feb 10, 2024

Oof, that was rotten. The only thing scary was the fact that I watched it in its entirety. It gets one star for the kick-ass fireplace kill at the end.

Unfortunately boring and woefully long. The irony of getting sleepy while watching a bunch of insomniacs in a horror house is Hauntingly real.

I did not know this was a remake. Sadly, one not quite as good as Thirteen Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Too much CGI, not enough atmosphere, the good cast is sorely underutilized, & the ending goes from too bombastic to just....feh. It has potential, but really needs to hold truer to the original film.

The movie is ok, nice special effects. It's not as good as the original movie.

The Haunting is a visually opulent yet ultimately underwhelming adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic novel, "The Haunting of Hill House." While director Jan de Bont creates a truly gothic atmosphere, complete with ornate sets, the film's storytelling falls completely flat. The plot, involving a group of people brought together to investigate a haunted mansion, lacks the depth and psychological nuance of the source material. The film's reliance on CGI scares over actual psychological horror is a missed opportunity, and the dated 90s special effects are more comical than terrifying. The ensemble cast, including Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, delivers competent performances, but the film's thin character development leaves no room for emotional investment. Fans of the Shirley Jackson novel should instead turn to the 1963 film or the modernized Netflix series adaption.

All they had to do was watch the 1963 film and copy it, they would have then had a good and scary film and not this nonsense.

This haunting of hill house remake has strong acting and atmosphere. Dutch director Jan de Bont's supernatural horror drama The Haunting (1999) is very pretty and compelling. Jan de Bont's direction is stylish and sleek with a melancholic tone. I wish more films tried for this Gothic, dreary aesthetic so popular in the 1990's. Screenwriter David Self takes a complex story and whittles it down to the eerie bits for a striking horror drama. He provides plenty of scares and tons of laughs surprisingly. An insomnia study is an intriguing premise to this fun update. Author Shirley Jackson creates an ominous and profound dramatic horror tale that has persevered throughout the ages. Robert Wise's 1960's horror film is neat and gets the drama, but is not that scary anymore. Mike Flanagan's miniseries The Haunting of Hill House is very moving and creepy. That's what I'd recommend first these days, but Jan de Bont's The Haunting is very fun and interesting with that slick 90's grit and style. Lili Taylor is phenomenal as the haunted heroine Nell Vance. Lili is really charming and sympathetic as Nell. I loved her in Mystic Pizza and The Conjuring, so it's no surprise to see she shines in The Haunting. You care for her heartbroken, lonely, playful, smart, brave, and struggling heroine Nell. Catherine Zeta-Jones is truly sexy and vivacious as Theodora with a darling of a performance. She's the life of the party, and a nice foil opposite Lili Taylor's moodier performance. Zeta-Jones is so charismatic that she comes across as flirty with Lili. Liam Neeson is sort of welcoming, but very underhanded as the strange Dr. David Marrow. He's experimenting on their sleep patterns in a spooky castle. He feels shady from the beginning. Owen Wilson is hilarious as the odd Luke Sanderson. Wilson always makes for fun comedy relief. Marian Seldes' grim maid Mrs. Dudley alongside Bruce Dern's creepy, raging caretaker Mr. Dudley makes for frightening supporting players. Can you believe TAR director Todd Field plays a guy named Todd Hackett in The Haunting? I laughed when I saw him with hair, no cap, and a goatee. He's a fun supporting character. Alix Koromzay is pretty as the redhead Mary Lambetta with a sense of foreboding. Candyman starlet Virginia Madsen plays a real scumbag as Jane Vance, who is trying to make Nell her maid and steal her home. Editor Michael Kahn could have cut this down more than a long 113 minutes, but he makes some of the jump scares freaky. Cinematographer Karl Walter Lindenlaub captures smooth tracking and panning shots. I love the close-ups shots with pretty lighting. Production designer Eugenio Zanetti makes this English castle and manor into a really eerie Gothic setting. Set decorators Cindy Carr and Mick Cukurs provide striking antique furniture for the massive interiors. Composer Jerry Goldsmith's score is very beautiful and melancholic with a sweeping symphonic touch. Sound designers Gary Rydstrom, Dennie Thorpe, Tony Eckert, Teresa Eckton, Frank E. Eulner, Ethan van der Ryn, Gary Summers, David John, and Frank 'Pepe' Merel do frightening ghost voices and growls with a constant wind noise for atmosphere. The CGI is dated, but looks good for what they're going for in my opinion. The practical door and window slams are far more effective than wispy ghosts. Costume designers Deborah Hopper, Ellen Mirojnick, and Danny Ned Moore's cozy outfits are cute. Makeup artist Jean Ann Black ensures Lili Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones look stunning with very flattering cosmetics. Hairstylists Judith A. Cory, Justin Ditter, and Karyn Huston give everyone long, flowing hair. In conclusion, The Haunting (1999) is not terrifying, but I had a ton of fun watching Jan de Bont's entertaining remake.

Loved the feel of the movie the chilling music but it was not a good film, it could of been made so much better not a fan of Owen Wilson's movies either. 4/10

Love this movie for its scares and the amazing set designs. The plot is pretty interesting to say the least, some of the scary scenes can be at least partially funny by the cast reacts to what is happening. Owen Wilson will make you lose your head laughing so much by the way he delivers a line or just kinda being there, Liam Neeson is alright does nothing special, lili taylor is cool as the hero who learns the secrets of the mansion and now for my favorite character Theo played by Catherine Zeta-Jones is just amazing as well as beautiful one of the best casting choices I’ve seen, delivering her lines perfectly as well as giving a damn good reaction. Good film highly recommend it.

The art of the scenes, lighting and special effects are stunning.

Overall, my opinions from seeing the film in theatres and after my recent rewatch haven't changed much. I love the mansion's look and the film's audio track, but the side characters are weak and uninteresting to watch. The film's plot is hugely vague, with many gaps in the story, leaving audiences with questions and little satisfaction.
