The Hollars Reviews
Unlike most of the reviews I thought it was good! I mean it wouldn’t win any awards but it was funny and definitely worth a watch!
All-star cast, Pop Warner script.
A boring and slow paced movie! Not worth the two hours.
I loved the chemistry of the actors, but hated the ending!
We had never heard of this movie - so went in with ZERO expectations... and was quickly immersed into a quirky, heart-warming tale of a midwestern (?) family who have every reason to give up, but keep fighting. It's a "small" story with a fantastic ensemble cast who really make the small personal moments feel real and poignant. Overall - it doesn't break any new ground in the indie world... but it was very entertaining and the pacing was great. There were some predictable life events - but that's what made it a good movie. This film reminds me of ULEE'S GOLD - another small independent movie that had an idea and theme, and carried it through to the end. It's a smart movie well worth your time. It is a bit sentimental which some may find sappy - but we really enjoyed it.
It may be true that the plot is predictable but the actors make it worth checking out. The 4 main characters and members of the Hollar family are superb! Each bring so much depth and love to their characters, seriously amazing actors. It really did make me laugh and make me cry…what more do u need?
This amazing cast does their best to carry this so-so plot. There are some truly amazing moments in this movie which makes this worth watching.
This film touched my heart. It had an amazing ability to go from quite funny to so dramatic, tears could happen. Every actor did a really good job making this believable.
Overly sentimental for my tastes, but Sharlto Copley and Charlie Day are really, really funny. The soundtrack is too repetitious.
Sunday rainy movie, typical lovable dysfunctional family getting through their lives. Some funny, some sentimental, overall cute. Good not great, but OK to keep around for a later watching.
Struggling New York City graphic novelist John Hollar (John Hollar) learns that his mother, Sally (Margo Martindale) is diagnosed with a brain tumor, and joins his brother, Ron (Sharlto Copley), and father, Don (Richard Jenkins), by her side. Her attending physician Dr. Fong tells them that the tumor is scheduled to be removed later that week. John is also facing the birth of his first child with his girlfriend Rebecca (Anna Kendrick). Ron is spying on his ex-wife Stacey, whom he divorced years ago, but he is confronted by her new partner Reverend Dan (Josh Groban). John meets his high school classmate and mother's nurse Jason (Charlie Day), who married Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), his ex-girlfriend. Jason rightly suspects that Gwen only married him after becoming pregnant with their child, and still has feelings for John... Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads, "The Hollars gathers an impressive assortment of talented stars; unfortunately, it's all in service of a story that's been played out more effectively in countless other indie dramedies. "The Hollars" is a great little indie comedy-drama directed by John Krasinski with a great ensemble cast and with Krasinski in the lead role as John Hollar. There´s an honesty and reality to this presentation of a slightly dysfunctional family. Difficult to watch at times, fun to watch at times. But, Krasinski manages to keep a good balance.
I really liked this movie! Laughed out loud multiple times. I just really like John Krasinski and his directing style. His humor is so unexpected and well timed. Cute movie!
A really good film. It touching, funny, and has great acting.
A cast of talented actors waisted on a film with no new ideas, little story and completely uninteresting characters. Someone must of had some blackmail material to get this cast together.
Krasinski approached a familiar routinely formulaic trope from the independent genre and presented it as a brilliantly touching family story with humor and beneficial casting charismatically performing to fuel the heart. (B+)
There's nothing special about this movie on the surface. But the strong ensemble cast (Sharlto Copley, Charlie Day, Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins & Margo Martindale stand out) and a pretty heartwarming story lifted this up. It hits some surprising emotional beats as well.
A John Krasinski film that a majority of people may not have heard of. Watching this makes me think a the younger Ed Burns films that are simple and about family and the common things we take for-granted in like.
