The Kid Reviews
If you can stick with it long enough to enjoy the second act, you may leave the theater with some feeling of satisfaction. However, too many holes exist in this beautifully filmed tapestry of the American west.

“The Kid” is a fresh venture across some well-traveled cinematic territory.

The fault in the film is the script by Andrew Lanham, whose third act plot is paper-thin from the beginning and at times is contrived.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 18, 2022
The film's honeyed cinematography and gruff stylings mean it often looks the part, but it moves too hurriedly, failing to conjure the atmosphere or majesty of the best of the genre.

The Kid struggles to articulate just what it wants to say about the tradition of great American myth-making.

'The Kid' is, in my opinion, a properly filmed western, but its narrative lacks the strength of a revolver as it transits the revisionist ground of the Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett story. [Full review in Spanish]

The true scene stealer of the movie is Pratt, with full beard, strange haircut and false teeth, who brings us a level of surreal, unredeemable villainy that is unlike anything he's done before.

D'Onofrio has woven a neat take, with each male character serving a symbolic role in a story about the choices a boy must make in order to become a man.

This has far, far too many soliloquies... The material itself isn't worthy of it.

An above-average oater.

A notable western that sharply reformulates the legend of Billy the Kid. [Full Review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 6, 2019
The Kid follows an unusual narrative structure, lollygagging from one setting to another, and taking far too long to make its point.

As much as the doomsayers insist, the western will never die. [Full review in Spanish]

A notable effort. [Full Review in Spanish]

Stimulating but hardly enduring. [Full review in Spanish]

THE KID is the first movie in some time that I have seen that makes good use of DeHaan's odd unsettling charisma.

The Kid feels alternatively rushed and too slow - short on characterization and motivation but dense with meaningless, trite conversations that try and fail to say something interesting about trauma.

'The Kid' is a solid, violent Western.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 13, 2019
It's all pretty conspicuously average, but The Kid comes to life in its second half, when Hawke takes center stage. Unsurprisingly, he's the best thing in the movie by a country mile.

What comes from this casting are some questionable scenes where acting was not on par with other performances in the film. Had some other actors been cast, the film could have come off stronger but instead felt stunted and off in several scenes.
