The King of Staten Island Reviews

It’s a film that has its positive qualities – especially when viewed in light of Davidson’s experience – but it doesn’t ultimately bring it all together.

| Original Score: C+ | May 1, 2024

The King of Staten Island employs a very well-known (and a bit overused) formula that goes on for way too long, but Judd Apatow balances it with a hilariously dark sense of humor, with the help of his co-writers, Pete Davidson and Dave Sirus.

| Original Score: B- | Jul 24, 2023

The talented cast welcomes every opportunity to create an authentic and natural vibe that comes through the screen.

...a predictably overlong yet mostly compelling endeavor...

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 1, 2023

The film admittedly takes way too long to set all that up, but it's all entertaining enough to understand why Apatow left it all in. It leads to some really wonderful moments while never losing the acerbic bite of Davidson's delivery.

| Original Score: 7/10 | May 5, 2023

In this 'already-been told tale,' Apatow demonstrates his vitality and that he's a true connoisseur of these kinds of endearing characters. [Full review in Spanish]

"Just raising awareness."

| Original Score: FOUR STARS | Mar 29, 2022

It's an oddly hopeful journey into growing up and moving on, and a testament to the power of the brainy adult dramedy. I'd let Davidson give me a tattoo...maybe.

| Mar 11, 2022

Having had little exposure to Davidson's SNL presence (outside of the occasional headline) or stand-up routine, it was nonetheless a pleasure to hang out with him in a manner that fans of other Apatow comedies will enjoy.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 18, 2022

The King of Staten Island probably won't make you an Apatow fan if you weren't one already, but it is likeable and accessible enough to be considered some of the director's finest work.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Aug 10, 2021

It delivers on its promise: character, pathos, humor, drama, catharsis.

| Aug 8, 2021

Probably the least rambunctious film that could've been made on the subject.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 6, 2021

Despite its flaws, this semi-autobiographical drama-comedy is great at the comedy, much less so with the drama - as frequently happens with Apatow.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 30, 2021

"The King of Staten Island" tells a unique story about grief, loss, and love. Showing that for your own health, it's important to confront your issues, and allow the people around you to help in the healing process.

| Original Score: B+ | Jun 24, 2021

Pete Davidson has never shied away from sharing personal details in his comedy routines. He goes one further on The King Of Staten Island.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 21, 2021

Ultimately, this is a drama about grief which is awkward at times, but ultimately rewarding. Also, Marisa Tomei. Chef's kiss, every time.

| Jun 4, 2021

The story is told with grace, and Davidson is great in the lead role - as is Bel Powley as Scott's on-and-off girlfriend Kelsey.

| May 28, 2021

It undeniably relies upon a formula, but it benefits from Davidson's rougher edges and brutal self-awareness.

If you've ever felt lost and not knowing what to do with your life, you will connect with the story. [Full review in Spanish]

While it doesn't reach its potential, The King of Staten Island has enough going for it that it's worth a lukewarm recommendation. Just don't expect it to enjoy a long reign in your heart.
