Critics Consensus

The Laundromat misuses its incredible cast by taking a disappointingly blunt and unfocused approach to dramatizing the real-life events that inspired it.

Karen Han Polygon Streep as Ellen is also wonderful, and only gets more fun to watch the closer her unassuming, middle-aged character gets to unraveling the machinations of the unfathomably rich. Oct 21, 2019 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News Soderbergh keeps the heavy themes light and even playful, and Streep rides the film's sardonic wave in a double role that sees her donning a garish disguise as a Panamanian office worker. Rated: B Oct 18, 2019 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson Vox The Laundromat is unwieldy at times, and its final scene is truly befuddling. But it's worth watching not just for its bitterly entertaining explanation of a densely confusing matter but also the way it illustrates a larger problem. Rated: 3/5 Oct 18, 2019 Full Review Aaron Charles InSession Film A low point for Soderbergh... Rated: C May 10, 2024 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews This unlikely (and extremely well-dressed) duo is at the centre of The Laundromat, and it is part of what makes the film so compelling [...]: when Mossack and Fonseca look into the camera and invite us into their world, it’s hard to resist their charm. Rated: 4/5 Aug 13, 2023 Full Review Elizabeth Garcia But Why Tho? A Geek Community The Laundromat attempts to give an understanding of how the rich benefit from tax avoidance, offshore companies, and so forth. As well as how much the rich will do to keep those benefits. Rated: 7/10 Jan 21, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

michela n Excellent writing. Witty dialogues with breaking the fourth wall. Sometime feels more of an advert than a film, yet this is not disturbing but indeed it makes the overall fictional storytelling more interesting. It's a lot of stories intertwined under the main narrative from Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas. The role of Meryl Streep playing two characters could have been avoided as it gives to the old lady a bigger role than reality, but yet adds an additional twist to the narrative. Overall is great and I will recommend saving it for further references. I will assume that the general public might be disappointed as too brainy - yet Panama papers were indeed pretty brainy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review jerry r Confusing, multiple topics mostly related to how to screw the government out of taxes. No acting can save this confusing screen play. My advice don't bother, you will just waste your time. Forget this movie even exists. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Richard K I thought it was attempting to be educational regarding economics, but it was much harder to follow than calculus or physics. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Birithivy Y The Laundromat - 7/10. As a fan of Steven Soderbergh's work, I'm a little disappointed with the film. It plays really close to the style of storytelling that was used in the far superior film, The Big Short. And I think that's the main problem with this movie. The Panama papers is a highly intriguing subject. So much controversy and so much to talk about, yet, I feel like this movie doesn't dig as deep as it should. The performances are good, but there's one thing that bothered me by the end of the film. I won't give away too much, but a character appears half way through the film, and that character is played like a cartoon caricature. It's a little disappointing, even though I'm aware its a satire film. Overall the film feels like it's missing something, even with huge stars like Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, and Gary Oldman headlining. Well, once it comes out on Netflix go watch it! It's definitely still a good watch and pretty funny at times! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Weighty Connected L "God passed a law against greed, but that didn't stop people from breaking it." This 2019 film based on a book exposing the 2016 Panama Papers, which detailed a financial criminal scandal of tax evasions that affected many people In the United States is disliked by critics and by a majority of those who watched it. But for me it was quite enjoyable and informative (brought about Scott Z. Burns' script) and quite stylish and humorous (through Steven Soderbergh's direction), with great performances from Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, and Antonio Banderas. The message of the movie is even better. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Dee B The movie was great and the message was better! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
