The Long Dumb Road Reviews
This comedy doesn't make me laugh. It's a road trip movie without the fun and adventure of most films in this genre. Mantzoukas is an unlikable character in the film so it's pretty hard to get on board.
Sad to say, by The Long Dumb Road is just "there". A nonexistent plot, meandering and ending without fanfare. The leads are wasted and the entire film is neither bad or good making me wonder what I have learned in the hour and some change I spent watching.
Nathan (Tony Revolori) is a naïve art school student, leaving home in Texas and heading for Los Angeles. Richard (Jason Mantzoukas) is a weary drifter with a life philosophy, a philosophy he can only fulfil with the aid of others. When fate throws them together, both have something to learn from each other and plenty to lose. While The Long Dumb Road doesn't really add much of anything that's new to the road trip concept, it does provide us with a couple of characters that are well-developed, likeable and, to some extent, relatable. Both of the leads do a great job, but Mantzoukas in particular steals the show, allowing his natural sense of humor and charisma to take front stage.
Movie was the definition of meh. It felt like every other road trip movie only not very funny...can't believe the high reviews. Glad some people liked it
Jason Mantzoukas is always a breath of fresh air. His genius in playing characters that are somewhat unstable is always incredible, and amazing. Mantzoukas is quite possibly the best improve artist in the world, and that is proven by the projects that he has undertaken over the years, and the fact that he is one of, if not the most highly most sought after voice actor in modern times. Manzoukas doesn't have to manipulate his voice to be desired, he just is who he is. Which is why he is the best.
There's nothing about this premise that sticks out and it doesn't have the wild gags that other road trip comedies do. However, it works because Revolori and Mantzoukas have great chemistry and the film is at its best when they're just talking. I enjoyed it.
By all rights, I should hate The Long Dumb Road. It has many elements in common with other movies that I have disliked. This type of road trip comedy with an annoying passenger is nothing new. However, this movie won me over because of 2 simple things. First and foremost, it starred Jason Mantzoukas, and I have a big soft spot for him. After years of listening to the How Did This Get Made podcast, I am in tune with his style of comedy, so every time he’s telling a joke I laugh. Tony Revolori plays a relatable character that goes on this road trip with Mantzoukas, and I appreciated his performance as well, but it was the older Greek dude with all the hair that made this movie so enjoyable for me. I even forgave the excess of profanity and over-the-top sexual references because they came from someone I find naturally funny. However, the more important thing that worked for me in The Long Dumb Road is the slow build to the wacky road trip adventures. Typically with a movie like this, the annoying person who comes along for a ride is overtly obnoxious from the first minute they climb into the car. It becomes so ridiculous that you feel like the sane person would be justified in abandoning the psycho or even calling the police after about 15 minutes. But here Mantzoukas’s character is somewhat normal, and extremely friendly. They take time to build a bond between these two guys before taking everything too far. I could see how they became friends, and Revolori’s reluctance to leave this nuisance behind feels justified. There are still plenty of elements in The Long Dumb Road that I didn’t love, but it’s a movie that did enough to entertain me and even make me think about watching it again someday.
Lots of chemistry in this comedy. Worth a watch.
Long Dumb Movie indeed. I like the lead actors, but that's all I can say. I did not laugh at all. I had no interest in their lives or stories. This movie put me to sleep.
Good watch, might watch again, and take it or leave it: it's just nothing special. Now, I like Jason Mantzoukas (The League, The Good Place, Brooklyn 99), he does crazy like no one else, but Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: Flash) is kind of the character to carry the movie, but he's playing a slightly more sensitive Flash Thompson, with moneybag parents, and part of the premise is that Richard has give Nat a taste of real life on this road trip so the character is literally designed not to be equipped to carry the movie in which he is designed to carry the movie. I think if they had fixed that problem this would have gone from okay to awesome. There is a lot of good humor in this, they could have expanded a couple of the scenes and upped the "this is so crazy" factor a little bit (see Search Party): it is almost like they or the studio were afraid, or they had to embody the fear of their protagonist in their approach. There are a lot of good things here, and I like a good roadtrip movie, there was just a lot of room for improvement.
Title fits the entire movie...
This is a good movie when it is focused on the two main characters. The film slips a little when it becomes a little too convoluted in the latter half. The film may have failed to find an audience, but this is far too common with the distributors. Streaming was the correct roll out for this film. I enjoyed the film and the actors are all incredible, even the subplot characters who have little to work with. If you enjoy dialogue heavy films, this is great. If you enjoy more bang for your buck, this won't appeal. This is a road movie with every sense of the word. A fish out of water story with an unexpected commanding performance by Jason Mantzoukas, who steals the entire film. 22/11/2019
I'm not a fan of this type of movie but, this was well done. The characters were believable. I wouldn't do that, but I believe people would do that.
What separates this from the usual road comedy is the great chemistry and performances of the two leads. Manzoukas as the manic drifter and revellori as the hapless student caught up in increasingly reckless behavior gives us a lot of laughs. Great supporting cast as well.
A great road trip move and it's great seeing Jason Mantzoukas taking on leading roles as he should be doing
Started out promising, but as this road trip movie progressed it just seemed to deteriorate. As two polar opposite personalities, Tony Revolori and Jason Mantzoukas, are thrown together by circumstance their misadventures for the most part just don't work on screen, as I see it. There are some laughs along the way but I felt this kind of set-up just never lived up to its potential or gelled into a funny screwball comedy.
