The Mercy Reviews

Dec 7, 2024

We all lie about our aspirations and achievements, not in order to attain advancement, nor to receive plaudits and advancement. This film shows an individuals poorly planned and underfunded attempt at a sort of desire to put his stamp on history whilst embracing ametueism. All of us would like to beat the odds in some way, be an unsung hero in some fashion. What is inconceivable to me is how he could have left such a great life behind. .

Recommended watch. Not action packed but a great view into the mindset of a man of the old ways and "tough upper lip" mentality... A view into the troubles of a man who dared to be... A tale of woe from a hero! Firth as aways captivates!

This is a film which tells an interesting, if obviously depressing, story. I wasn't aware of the story prior to watching the film and watching it made me curious to see a documentary or something more factual that investigates what may have taken place. It is a bit of a slow moving film I suppose, with the main plot not fully getting 'underway' until close to half an hour into the films running time, although the build up does give us an idea of how close the main character, Donald, was to his family (wife and sons). I felt it was a bit cheesy how scenes of Donald's struggles on board would cut straight to memories of happier times back 'on dry land', from many years ago. If your someone who looks for constant action in such films, then this will likely seem a bit slow and plodding and may well not hold your attention. However, I think it does well at highlighting the perhaps danger of male masculinity or the over competitiveness in some such people? if you know what I mean. Its a thought provoking watch, although not exactly greatly compelling visually, it may well provide proverbial food for thought, in relation to both people's strive for success, male masculinity/machismo and enforced/continual isolation. I would only recommend this film if your particularly interested in the main story.

Great, thought-provoking character study. How one man's dream turned into a trap...and the impact this had on him and his family. Be careful what you wish for! Fabulous period details.

Here's a movie with A-list actors, but a story that I found lacking. I didn't appreciate it all that much.

An atypical story, whose power dwells in the good work of the actors and the strength of the final, surprising conclussion. Probably the movie gives the dignity of a situation which was much more prosaic in the real life.

It's nowhere near the quality of the documentary titled Deep Water. That doc was much more exhilarating and suspenseful. The Mercy on the other hand succumbs to big budget cliches, by focusing on some of the points which are so minor in the big picture. If you want to learn about the Globe Race or the life of Donald Crowhurst, watch Deep Water instead of this drivel.

This is as bad as it gets.

The Mercy, basada en una historia real me parece una muy buena película biográfica con un casting de primera. La recomiendo.

Lack of depth or substance. Almost as bad as c.m. If you have a choice between the two, watch this one.

The Mercy follows amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst as he signs up for a solo around the world voyage in 1968 for the simple reason of proving to himself that he can do it and he didn't stand by and watch others have adventures while he lived his day to day life. It's only while at sea he realises his limitations on the journey he has taken as he struggles with boat repairs, sailing proficiency, loneliness and his mind slowly unravelling while everyone at home believes he is actually making record breaking progress against his competitors. It was a very decent story, not something I knew anything about. Colin Firth was very good in the lead role beginning the film bustling with excitement and confidence and ending a frail wreck of a man. Rachael Weisz was somewhat underused but good in the scenes she had. An entertaining true story that's worth watching.

Colin Firth is outstanding. A desperately sad tale of innocent dreams, thwarted ambition, and a family ripped apart.

Once again if not for Colin Firth carrying the film with his usual depth of performance this movie might have fallen short.

A good film but a bit slow for my liking and not really as thrilling as i'd hoped it was going to be.

With no great experience at sailing in the open ocean, and in a boat that was untested Donald Crowhurst left Teignmouth, Devon, in the United Kingdom in the 31st of October 1968. Donald was a contestant in the Sunday Times Golden Globe race to circumnavigate the world solo. Donald put up his house and business in order to raise the money to compete. The film chronicles the obstacles faced by Donald Before and during the race. The film features Colin Firth as Donald Crowhurst. Rachel Weisz plays Donald's wife Clair. The film also features David Thewlis as Donald's publicist. The film was written by Scott Z. Burns and is directed by James Marsh. The film does what a film is supposed to do. It entertains and touches one's emotions. Don't believe what you read about this movie, at an hour and fifty-two minutes it is just the right length.

I was really excited about this film. Unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. I was disappointed in the story and acting.
