There are two shark movies, Steven Spielberg鈥檚 JAWS and Jaume Collet-Serra鈥檚 THE SHALLOWS. Every other shark flick is garbage with the exception of JAWS 2, which gets an 鈥淓鈥� for 鈥渆ffort.鈥� I鈥檓 not kidding about this. If you think there鈥檚 a better shark movie out there, then you are confused. Very, very, confused. /////////////// This movie breaks the mold. Our U.S. American heroine has come to the Mexican beach where her mother (who has died of cancer) once surfed the waves. Honorably, she wants to follow in Mom鈥檚 footsteps. But while she surfs the warm waters of Mexico, a huge shark bites her, and the rest of the movie is 鈥渟o-near yet so-far,鈥� for she is always just one or two football fields away from shore--SALVATION--but she can鈥檛 swim that far before the shark eats her. She knows this, because the shark murders several beach-goers ahead of her. The fish will not go away. It attacks anyone who is not safely standing on a coal reef or a dead whale or a buoy. (And even then, it takes a bite.) ////////////////// THE SHALLOWS is a survival picture. We begin the adventure with the sexiest 鈥渟ex sequence鈥� I鈥檝e ever seen: Blake Lively strips down and puts on a wetsuit and runs into the water. (Wow. Drool.) We end the story with her having used every possible means of staying alive, only to . . . well, I won鈥檛 tell you if she lives or dies. It鈥檚 pretty exciting and very emotional. The consequence for the shark is pretty stupid, however, but no lamer than any other shark movie, especially Jaws IV. As far as character development, there is some, but it鈥檚 pretty much tacked on, and I鈥檇 rather have done without it. If I can鈥檛 FEEL character development, what鈥檚 the point of including it? She's dropping out of med school; she's going back to med school. These details were merely to explain the fact that--unlike you and me--she is not a dumbass and can turn certain death into a chance at life. What Blake Lively's character goes through! I'd have had ZERO CHANCE. Watching her is an exercise in nail-biting. You will like this movie. I promise.

Fun and enjoyable. Not to mention a decent movie for horror fans. You must check it out you'll love it.

Cool concept. Great cinematography and pacing. Can be quite thrilling. Blake lively, while a terrible actress, manages to be pretty good in this role. I also take issue with the tone of the film--it paints itself as this grounded movie, situated in the real world, yet the plot development really stretches into the supernatural. That uncertainty of atmosphere breaks immersion and plot cohesion in the latter half of the film. The screenwriter really couldn't decide what he was going for.

It could have been a good movie but it lacked realism - Lively acted well but the shark attack scenes were fake and not realistic.

Sorry but the Fan score of 59 is very low lol This was a good movie. Solid 70-75. Not a masterpiece but very entertaining and it pulls you in. Very few movies gave me this level of anxiety.

Blake is a great actress and sells this movie

Blake Lively is actually excellent as a surfer girl attacked by a shark. Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan and House of Wax) delivers a survival horror thriller called The Shallows (2016). It is a frightening horror film, a clever survival thriller, and a lovely surfing picture all at once. Collet-Serra鈥檚 direction delivers exciting shark attacks and ingenious ways to survive by being resourceful. It鈥檚 a beautiful film visually with breathtaking wide shots of vast waters and expansive beaches. Blake Lively also looks stunning as a smart and sexy surfer in a bikini. The Shallows is attempting to be like Blue Crush, Into the Blue, 127 Hours, all mixed with Jaws. It rides the waves of terror with ease thanks to Blake Lively鈥檚 standout acting performance. Writer Anthony Jaswinski came up with engaging scenarios for shark attacks, the shark circling the waters, tending to injuries, timing the high and low tides, jellyfish appearing, jellyfish stings, coral reef damage, to even treating a cute seagull. I like all the different ways that Lively has to come up with to live with limited resources. The Shallows has a great premise of having a foolish American tourist surfer trying to surf in a secluded secret break off the beaches of Mexico. Then a shark attack occurs and we鈥檙e off. I think people will continue to revisit The Shallows as the excellent film it remains. Blake Lively is surprisingly gripping, moving, likable, and impressive as surfer heroine Nancy Adams. Lively is not one of my favorite actresses, but she delivers a compelling and engaging lead actress role in The Shallows. 脫scar Jaenada is very nice and considerate as local Carlos, although he never reveals the name of the beach, which I imagine was something along the lines of Shark Death Bay. Sully Seagull is adorable as the seagull in The Shallows, who befriends and helps Blake Lively out. Editor Joel Negron鈥檚 smooth cuts from surfing footage to the shark鈥檚 perspective are amusing. Cinematographer Flavio Mart铆nez Labiano鈥檚 wide shots of Blake Lively and her double surfing are fabulous. Mick O'Brien and Mark Levey鈥檚 bright lighting is lovely. All the shark, whale, and dolphin CGI look spectacular. The surfing stunts are cool. Composer Marco Beltrami鈥檚 film score is thrilling. Costume designer Kym Barrett鈥檚 bikini and wet suit for Blake Lively look great. In short, The Shallows is a brief and brisk survival horror film at a tight 86 minutes.

Cringe. I thought Blake Lively鈥檚 acting was pretty good but the CGI dolphins and shark are poor. I also think the director doesn鈥檛 understand tides. The rock she was on was a metre out of the water 25 minutes before high tide, yet she needs to leave it to swim to the buoy because it will be fully submerged soon鈥︹€� seriously? Not sure flares work when wet. The ending wasn鈥檛 great either

This movie has it all- terrible acting, flimsy plot and a wonderfully hurried happy ending. To say it was a waste of time is an understatement. It's not even cheesy or camp. This movie belongs sunken at sea and should never be mentioned.

Other than Blake Lively in a bikini, and a few moments of cool surfing video, there was nothing of quality in this movie. The premise is ridiculous, the plot seemed devised by a teenage boy, and the 鈥渃limactic ending鈥� absolutely absurd. Although the CGI effects were strong and almost realistic, it could not overcome the complete lack of reality involving any of the shark behavior. From the first moment she enters the beach - a completely pristine, placid beach, without even so much as lapping waves, then paddles out into roaring surf with monster tubes, they lost me. Then she spends an entire evening and part of the next day on a rock before she mentions the tide coming in (tides are 12-hour cycles EVERYWHERE). Add to that how a dead whale manages to stay stationary for days while the helmet drifts into the beach鈥� duh. Not a single thing about this movie bears resemblance to believable, which means the writing and directing failed.

Better than most shark survival films. Plus this one has the amazing Blake Lively

"The Shallows" delivers precisely what one would expect from a movie of its genre and succeeds in maintaining a suspenseful, entertaining, and tense atmosphere throughout.

The best shark movie ever made. Much better than Jaws.
