The Skin I Live In Reviews

Banderas’ Ledgard is charismatic, sinister and full of deep rooted rage. Banderas’ performance is very remisicitant of Cary Grant in Suspicion (1941), but our suspicions of Ledgard is very much justified in The Skin I Live In.

Alberto Iglesias' astounding score is a diverse work, taking in a wide array of tones and arrangements, shifting from high tension string sections, to electronic backbeats, from guitar drones to moody saxophone.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 7, 2024

The closest Almodóvar has come to making a horror film, The Skin I Live In is a deeply uncomfortable yet fascinating puzzle box of a film.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 27, 2024

Almodóvar has treated each of the elements of the film with surgical devotion. [Full review in Spanish]

An essay on bioethics with elements of science fiction and black humor. [Full review in Spanish]

There's never been another Almodovar film quite like The Skin I Live In, a complex thriller that, much like the filmmakers career, transitions from one kind of movie to another, shifting the audience's sympathies in unexpected and challenging ways.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Feb 27, 2022

Banderas settles into the dark character of Dr. Ledgard with a stillness and apparent ease that gave me the chills I left the movie theater wondering if it worth it.

Antonio Banderas returns to Spain and mentor Pedro Almodovar in this outlandish melodrama dripping with science-fiction tropes.

An objectively oddball piece of work...

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 3, 2019

The Skin I Live In is the most disquieting film I've seen in years. Don't let that stop you from seeing it, though. It's also the masterpiece we've long awaited from Pedro Almodovar.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 5, 2019

"The Skin I Live In" is a film where love takes many forms, some of which are perverse, but it's how the director is guided by his one for cinema that makes his latest feel so alive.

The Skin I Live In is well worth seeing. Mad scientists overwhelmed by hubris are nothing new but no iteration of the story has been told in quite this way.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 20, 2018

... in this polymorphous shocker Almodóvar has crafted one of his most berserk and bewitching fables about the fluidity of gender and the unpredictability of desire.

| Aug 29, 2018

The Skin I Live In is a definite must-see, as all its elements harmoniously blend to create a cinematic masterpiece that stands out not just this year, but over the course of the past decade.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Aug 29, 2018

Banderas' performance achieves a perfect chill.

Not since David Cronenberg have surgery, sex and violence frolicked in the same stained bed so skillfully.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Feb 6, 2018

Georges Franju's 1960 classic horror Eyes Without a Face is an obvious touchstone but the new film is more ridiculous than horrific.

| Jan 3, 2018

In Almodovar's world, the flesh is deception, the comedy dark, the sex weird and the tears real; this time, however, the director just wasn't able to pull off all of these elements.

| May 9, 2016

"The Skin I Live In" fails because it doesn't have a moral or anything else to say in spite of its self-seriousness.

| Oct 7, 2015

Almodóvar has a body of work as rigorously personal as any out there, and, even with its flaws, he wears this latest Skin rather well.
