The Tax Collector Reviews

Mar 30, 2025

The movie is filled with gore. The excessive use of guns has become the standard in most action thriller movies. The ever ongoing greed, betrayal, and corruption presented is used ad nausea. Many hard working individuals and business owners are subjected to extortion from these gangs. It brings to mind the movie series Sicario. The love of their own personal families is a farce. The destruction they cause other people and their families contradicts "love of family" or even "love of God". Then one needs to ask, "What do they do with all the money they extort"? Their lives are always in high gear adrenalin. What a life! Yikes.

It's sad to see Shia Labeouf to participate in this low quality movies, his ears didn't make sense and was distracting, confusing when the Mexican was the actual one doing Judo! Overall disappointing, I would like to see him in a movie with a richer story, definitely a quick buck movie for him, trying to give a push to the Marketing of a lacking acting production.

movie starts to look like it could be. a 2.5 star movie and then throws all that in the trash

B rated at best. It has tons of potential and the story line is there, however it leaves you questioning specific connections between characters. Hopefully they will do a sequel telling the backstory of these characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the storyline. Not sure what the critics are talking about but I rarely agree with them anyway.

Half a star. Could HAVE BEEN an amazing movie but horrible director or acting or something was off. Too many cringe moments and shitty scripts. Like the Lowrider movie, could’ve been a historical movie like Blood in Blood Out or Mi Familia. But this Tax Collector and Lowrider movie a complete failure.

Seems like you might have something some I realistic to convey for a little while there, but ultimately went the typical Mickey mouse route. With typical occultic hints. Nothing to write home about.

I think Shia was definitely the right cast for the role, even if his acting skills are not always on point. But the movie itself is absolute entertainment, and I can just recommend it. If some scenes were shot a bit better/made more sense, then it would have been 5 stars. But I think 4 stars are fair enough, even if this isn't Shia LaBeouf's best role of all time.

From David Ayer who has written and directed and co written better movies. It was like watching a bad tv movie with some awesome actors. Id rather watch Street Kings, Fury, Training day, End of watch, Suicide squad and Bright from David Ayer, which were better movies!

This can be summed up in a few sentences: “Who thought this was a good idea” “Average story told without compelling plot” “Jimmy Smitts”

I really like this movie. The cast and the storyline. This is the 3rd time I have seen it. I wished they would make the 2nd 1 and it would be released.

Looked like a Good movie but never found the time to watch it. After watching it I wished I would've watched it sooner! Shia Lebouf was unbelievable

Climatically builds up towards the end, but if director David Ayer is renowned in telling criminally grounded stories, his confidence should've been boosted in telling a longer story that would've suited this utterly underdeveloped pettiness beneath more professionally managing as seen much prior albeit the cast. I think the "famous movie critic's" that gave this movie a low score. Are ignorant morons. This film was amazing. The acting was brilliant. The story and plot were thrilling. Finally the writing that made the 90s movies so great, has came back to us. I believe to be a paid critic of movies. There should be an evaluation of that person. Looking forward to the sequel!

Overall, this film is truly a mixed bag. Actor Shia LaBeouf is easily the best element of this film, and whenever he is off-screen, the film becomes too slow-paced. Visually, this film is pleasing; the same can be said for the film's audio track. The film is extremely predictable; by the final moments, the duration had undoubtedly overstayed its welcome.

The good, bad and ugly. The Good: costuming was great, the detail to the style of clothing one would think was work in LA in that scene was great. Weapons were mostly ok, not enough variations of guns though. The vehicles weren't so great, if this is supposed to be in LA from some bosses, I'd expect to see some high dollar foreign cars, low riders or some other common cars you'd see in LA. The BAD: bogus story line from 1972, big boss, goes to collect and a new big boss is taking turf, he tries to exude power and a war breaks out between the rivals. Storyline is total trash. Not much character building during this flick. You know the main character and his family were in the drug business, but that's about it. The Ugly: film is trash, sorry not sorry. Too much machismo in this film to be taken seriously. Bad storylines, outside of great costuming for some scenes, Creeper where's like the same suit in most scenes..🤔… I don't think muscle getting money in any crew would do that. Look at John wick..🤷🏼‍♂️.. the shooting/fighting scenes were over the top rob zombie style gore, and mostly unnecessary IMO. There are so many other ways to send a strong message in film without stomping someone into oblivion. One last thing…🤔.. all "evil" drug lords from Mexico are not down with Santa La Muerte..🤦🏽‍♂️, and all people that work with Santa La Muerte aren't evil… films and their reach is too out of control. One of the many reasons this film tanked in box office. Anyway, just an honest review.

A movie that could've been excellent, but is once again destroyed by its simple that was easy what are you stressing about good ending third act.

Your enjoyment of this movie is probably going to be totally subjective. I love crime drama and cartel movies. I freely admit that The Tax Collector is soapy and melodramatic, but I really enjoyed it and have watched it a couple of times now. It feels like a less substantive companion piece to Sicario. I think it's really well shot by Salvatore Totino and has some really well executed scenes with great acting from Bobby Soto, Cinthya Carmona, and George Lopez. Does it go a little over-the-top with violence? Sure. For me that comes with the genre of cartel crime movies, but your mileage may vary. There are some moments with the antagonist that feel unnecessarily over the top. Although personally I appreciate the unbalanced and slightly campy vibe Jose Conejo Martin brings, there's one specific sequence where he's preparing for war that just kind of feels gross and could/probably should have been cut out of the movie. And of course for anybody who follows pop culture news, Shia LaBeouf's presence may be an off-putting factor. Whatever might be said about him as a human, he's always entertaining to watch. Akin to loving Harry Potter while feeling neutral-to-negative about J.K. Rowling. In summary, if you like crime/cartel movies there are a whole lot of worse ways to spend an hour and a half.
