The Tax Collector Reviews

It's never a good sign when the only lifeblood in your film is the white boy performing offensive gangster cosplay.

| Jun 5, 2021

A strong supporting cast and a handful of provocatively gruesome action sequences can't save the poorly-paced movie from Ayer's worst instincts: A reliance on macho moralism, uninspired visual language, and broad, often racist stereotypes.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Feb 28, 2021

The Tax Collector features confident camera work, one propulsively-edited gun battle, and solid work from its actors, at least for what they're given.

| Feb 5, 2021

A violent, gore-soaked portrait of gang life with nothing new to say.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 29, 2021

It's absolutely worth a rental for Ayer fans, but unless it actually leads into a more expansive saga, not necessarily a keeper.

Rather entertaining...but they didn't deliver backstory for these characters, which would have served the narrative later on...

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 17, 2020

I thought this was going to be pretty solid...and after the first twenty minutes, I knew I was trapped. It was weird, knowing the context of Shia and his body tattoo...

| Original Score: 1/5 | Sep 17, 2020

The quick editing and awkwardly shot angles make this film messy, and it takes away any emotional potential it had. Its one-dimensional villain, Conejo, comes off as a comical caricature that's frustrating to watch.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 15, 2020

It is alright to make a film using a well worn film idea, what is not acceptable is that you do not instill that framework with something extraordinary. Something to separate it from the others.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 14, 2020

The Tax Collector is nothing if not efficient and plentiful when it comes to the barrages of bullets and bloody, brutal beatdowns, but it's also bland and boring.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Sep 5, 2020

In Ayer's very uneven filmography, The Tax Collector is among his most minor works. [Full review in French]

It taxed my eyes to watch this movie; it taxed my brain to make sense of this movie; it taxed my physical body to endure this movie. It was the bad guys versus the worse guys and I lost.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Aug 27, 2020

Ayer may have gone too far but LeBeouf is fascinating to watch. But we only glimpse at the notorious tattoo.

The Tax Collector takes us down a blood-spattered street with a mindless narrative. [Full review in Spanish]

The story can never find a proper pacing or a unique path, with mostly cardboard characters and uninspired direction from Ayer.

| Original Score: 5.5/10 | Aug 21, 2020

This whole salacious scene may be Ayer's bread-and-butter, but he's cut this same content so many ways that it's not pulpy or titillating anymore.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 15, 2020

It's functional as a waste of time gangster flick, but other than that, nah man...

| Aug 14, 2020

As it stands, it's not enough to counteract the negative image that it puts out...not without entertainment value, but I can't say I liked it.

| Aug 14, 2020

Not many redeeming qualities to collect from a film so poor it borders on self-parody. [Full Review in Spanish]

A thoroughly unpleasant movie that suggests it's time for Ayer to leave the streets of Los Angeles permanently...it would be wise for him to leave his old haunts behind him and move on.
